Description

Maugeri’s Contrada Volpare is a still Etna rosato made entirely from Nerello Mascalese, grown on the volcano’s eastern slopes. From steep, terraced vineyards in Milo, it brings together the freshness of high-altitude fruit and the distinctive mineral character of volcanic soils.

Tasting Notes
The nose is lively, with wild strawberry, raspberry and redcurrant alongside delicate floral notes and a hint of Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, juicy red-fruit flavours meet pronounced mineral freshness and a citrus-led finish, with a rounded texture from time on the lees and in French oak.

Production
The Nerello Mascalese comes from Contrada Volpare in Milo, around 700 metres above sea level on Etna’s east-facing slope. Vines are trained as bush vines on steep terraces supported by dry lava-stone walls, in mineral-rich volcanic sand, and are farmed according to organic and sustainable principles. The grapes are hand-harvested in October, gently pressed and cold-macerated; fermentation takes place partly in stainless steel and partly in French oak, followed by four months on fine lees.

Food & Serving
Serve with grilled shellfish, vegetable dishes or a charcuterie board. Its lively acidity and mineral character also make it a versatile match for lighter Mediterranean fare. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C; decanting is not necessary.

The family’s return to its origins in this distinctive wine-growing area is reflected in its focus on Nerello Mascalese, steep terraced vineyards and sustainable farming. The estate’s work represents the demanding, hands-on tradition of Etna’s heroic viticulture.
