Description
Mathieu Chêneuf Rouge Felibre 2019 is a classic southern Rhône red that channels the soul of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in a generous, approachable style. Crafted predominantly from Grenache with support from Mourvèdre and Syrah, it offers both depth and drinkability, making it a smart choice for those seeking authentic Rhône character without the grand cru price tag. Drawing on centuries of family tradition, André Mathieu signs a wine that bridges historical savoir-faire with modern pleasure.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Rouge Felibre 2019 shows a deep ruby core with garnet highlights at the rim, hinting at both concentration and a touch of evolution. The nose opens with ripe red and black cherries, wild strawberries, and blackberries, layered with notes of dried herbs (garrigue), black pepper, licorice, and subtle hints of leather and warm stones.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a supple, velvety texture driven by Grenache and framed by the firmer structure of Mourvèdre and Syrah. Flavors of juicy raspberry, plum, and dark cherry are woven together with savory spice, thyme, and a faint gamey nuance. Tannins are fine-grained yet present, giving the wine enough grip to stand up to rich dishes while remaining polished and accessible. The finish is long and slightly spicy, with a pleasant warmth that feels very true to the southern Rhône. Enjoyable now with a short decant, it has the balance to evolve gracefully for another 6–10 years from vintage, developing more secondary notes of tobacco, truffle, and dried fig over time.
Production
Sourced from vineyards in the Rhône Valley influenced by the same sun-drenched climate and complex soils that make Châteauneuf-du-Pape famous, Rouge Felibre benefits from a mix of pebble-strewn terraces, clay, and sandy parcels that favor ripeness while retaining freshness. The fruit is typically harvested by hand to ensure careful selection of bunches and to protect the old vines that are a hallmark of the Mathieu family’s holdings. In the cellar, André Mathieu follows a traditional approach: gentle destemming, long maceration to extract color and fine tannins, and fermentation in neutral vats with minimal intervention. Aging is usually carried out in large, old foudres or inert containers rather than heavy new oak, allowing the blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah to express its pure Rhône identity and the nuances of its terroir.
Food & Serving
This wine is a natural partner for hearty Mediterranean and classic French cuisine. Think grilled lamb chops with rosemary, slow-cooked beef daube, duck confit, cassoulet, or herb-roasted pork shoulder. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses, game birds, and richly flavored vegetable dishes such as ratatouille or roasted aubergine with olive tapenade. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression of fruit and spice. For current drinking, decant 30–60 minutes to help the aromatics open up; as the wine ages and gains complexity, a 1–2 hour decant can further soften the tannins and reveal its more tertiary notes.
Producer
Domaine André Mathieu is one of the traditionalist bastions of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with family roots in the appellation stretching back around 400 years. Over generations, the Mathieus have carefully tended some of the region’s oldest plots, including vines dating to the late 19th century, and have remained committed to classic southern Rhône winemaking. Known for crafting reds that often incorporate all 13 authorized grape varieties of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the estate prioritizes terroir expression, balance, and age-worthiness over fleeting trends. Within the region, André Mathieu is respected as a guardian of heritage, consistently producing characterful Châteauneuf-du-Pape and excellent-value Côtes du Rhône wines that offer a genuine taste of this historic landscape.
