Description

Massolino’s 2022 Chardonnay brings the precision and pedigree of a great Barolo estate to a beautifully crafted white, offering a fresh, refined take on Piedmont’s international grape. Sourced from carefully selected vineyards in the Langhe hills, it balances vibrant fruit with a subtle, Burgundian-inspired elegance. This is a modern classic in the making, showcasing how a historic red-wine producer can turn out a remarkably characterful Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Massolino Chardonnay shows a bright, pale straw-yellow color with silvery-green reflections, signaling its youth and freshness. The nose opens with pure, lifted aromas of lemon zest, ripe pear, crisp green apple and white peach, gradually revealing notes of acacia blossom, fresh almonds and a gentle hint of vanilla or brioche from careful élevage. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, precise and beautifully balanced, with lively acidity giving a clean, mouthwatering line to the fruit. Flavors of citrus, orchard fruits and a touch of tropical nuance (think subtle pineapple or melon) are layered over a fine mineral backbone that reflects its Langhe origins. The texture is polished and lightly creamy without feeling heavy, finishing long, dry and saline. Enjoyable now for its energy and purity, it should drink well over the next 3–5 years, gaining a bit more complexity and roundness with short-term cellaring.

Production
The grapes for Massolino’s Chardonnay come from hillside vineyards in the Langhe area of Piedmont, where calcareous and marl-rich soils, combined with good altitude and wide day–night temperature swings, promote aromatic intensity and crisp natural acidity. The fruit is typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, ensuring pristine bunch selection and gentle handling from vineyard to cellar. After a soft pressing, fermentation usually takes place at controlled temperatures in stainless steel and, in part, in oak, to balance freshness with texture and complexity. A period of maturation on fine lees, with occasional bâtonnage, adds subtle creaminess and depth while preserving the wine’s clean, mineral-driven profile.

Food & Serving
This Chardonnay is a versatile food partner that shines with refined yet uncomplicated dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or baked white fish, shellfish, and seafood risottos, as well as poultry in light cream or herb sauces, vegetable tarts, and fresh goat or young cow’s milk cheeses. Serve chilled, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to highlight its aromatic precision and acidity; a slightly warmer pour will bring out more of the wine’s texture and subtle oak tones. Decanting is not essential, but giving the wine a few minutes in the glass can help it open up and reveal additional layers of fruit and florals.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the historic and most respected names in Barolo, known for its deep, age-worthy Nebbiolo wines that faithfully express the character of the region. Over generations, the family has expanded its holdings across some of the area’s most prized crus, building a reputation for combining tradition with thoughtful innovation. Their move into carefully crafted whites, including Chardonnay from the Langhe, reflects both a curiosity and a commitment to terroir-driven winemaking beyond red varieties. Today, Massolino stands as a benchmark producer in Piedmont, with a long track record of critical acclaim and a loyal following among collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.
