Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Vigna Rionda shows a deep garnet core with brick-tinged reflections at the rim, typical of serious Nebbiolo from Serralunga. The nose is intense and complex, layering dark cherry, black plum and ripe raspberry with notes of black licorice, dried rose petals, tar, rusted iron, and a whisper of sweet spice and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet refined, with a concentrated core of dark red and black fruits supported by firm, polished tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavors of black cherry, blood orange, licorice, dried herbs and a faint mineral, almost ferrous note unfold in successive waves, leading to a long, savory, and beautifully persistent finish. While already harmonious and compelling in the medium term, this Barolo has the structure and balance to evolve gracefully for 15–25 years or more, gaining even greater complexity with time.

Production
Vigna Rionda is one of Barolo’s most revered vineyards, situated in Serralunga d’Alba on limestone and clay-rich marl with excellent exposure, giving wines of depth, structure, and striking minerality. Massolino farms this historic cru with meticulous attention, hand-harvesting Nebbiolo grapes at optimal ripeness to preserve both concentration and freshness. After careful selection, the wine is traditionally vinified, with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and complex aromatics, followed by long maturation in large oak casks to respect the purity of the fruit and terroir. It then rests for an additional lengthy period in bottle—around 36 months—before release, allowing the powerful components to knit together into a seamless whole.

Food & Serving
This Barolo Riserva shines alongside richly flavored dishes such as braised beef, ossobuco, roasted lamb, game birds, truffle-infused risotti, and aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and elegant structure. Decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended in its youth to allow the wine to open fully; older bottles should be decanted gently and more briefly, primarily to separate them from any sediment.
