Description
Massolino Barolo Parussi 2020 in magnum (1.5 L) is a striking expression of Barolo from the revered Parussi vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. Unlike most of Massolino’s wines, which are rooted in Serralunga d’Alba, this cuvée showcases a different facet of Nebbiolo: brighter, tauter, and laser-focused. The 2020 vintage stands out for its precision and elegance, promising a long, fascinating evolution in large format.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barolo Parussi is luminous and vibrant, with a radiant ruby-garnet hue that hints at both purity and depth. The nose is finely etched and very focused, opening with red cherry, wild strawberry, and blood orange, followed by rose petals, violet, and hints of dried herbs. Subtle notes of licorice, crushed chalk, and spice emerge with air, underlining the wine’s tension and mineral drive.
On the palate, Parussi 2020 is beautifully linear and “knife‑sharp,” with a firm, refined structure and a mouthwatering, almost electric acidity. The tannins are tightly knit but ultra-fine, framing flavors of redcurrant, sour cherry, pomegranate, and tangy cranberry, layered with dried roses, tea leaves, and a saline, chalky undertone from the sandy limestone soils. This is a Barolo built more on energy and clarity than sheer power, with a long, precise finish that leaves lingering notes of citrus peel and spice. In magnum, its aging potential is outstanding: expect it to unfold and gain complexity over 10–20+ years, with the format offering an even slower, more graceful evolution.
Production
Parussi comes from a single vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, where sandy, limestone-rich soils and a slightly warmer, well‑exposed site give Nebbiolo a particularly perfumed, finely chiseled profile. The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve aromatic purity and structural balance. In keeping with Massolino’s traditional Barolo philosophy, the wine is vinified with careful, gentle extraction and extended maceration to build complexity, then aged in large neutral oak (botti) to allow the vineyard character and the 2020 vintage to shine without overt wood influence. Bottling in magnum further emphasizes longevity and nuance.
Food & Serving
This Barolo Parussi is a natural match for refined, savory dishes such as truffle risotto, tajarin pasta with butter and sage, vitello tonnato, braised veal shank, or roasted game birds. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Castelmagno, or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) and allow the magnum ample time to open; decanting 1.5–3 hours before serving is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and fully reveal the wine’s aromatic precision and mineral tension.
Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of Barolo’s benchmark, family-run estates, known for its deep roots in traditional winemaking and its faithful expression of terroir. While the heart of the winery lies in Serralunga’s powerful, structured crus, Parussi is a singular exception, extending the estate’s footprint into Castiglione Falletto and showcasing a more lifted, floral style of Nebbiolo. Over generations, Massolino has earned a reputation as a reference producer in the region, with consistently acclaimed Barolo releases that highlight the diversity of top sites across the Langhe and a steadfast commitment to classic, ageworthy wines.
