Description

Massolino Barolo Parussi 2020 in this impressive 3L double magnum format showcases a rare and captivating side of Barolo. While Massolino is famed for its Serralunga d’Alba crus, Parussi is the house’s sole wine sourced from Castiglione Falletto, offering a brilliantly bright, razor‑sharpened expression of Nebbiolo. The sandy limestone soils of this historic vineyard gift a wine of precision, tension and luminous elegance, built to evolve beautifully over the next 10–20 years.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barolo Parussi is radiant and limpid, with a vibrant garnet core and youthful ruby highlights at the rim. The nose is finely etched and focused, offering high‑toned aromas of wild cherry, raspberry, rose petals, violet, orange peel and delicate hints of anise, crushed chalk, and subtle spice. There’s a distinct impression of lift and clarity, with nothing out of place. On the palate, this Barolo is taut, linear and “knife‑sharp,” with a sleek, mineral backbone that drives incredibly pure red‑fruit flavors. Silky yet firm tannins wrap around flavors of sour cherry, red currant, pomegranate, licorice and dried herbs, all underpinned by a cool, chalky energy from the sandy limestone soils. The finish is long, focused and mouthwatering, promising significant complexity with time. In this 3L format, the wine’s aging potential is outstanding: it will benefit from at least 5–7 years of cellaring and should drink beautifully for 20+ years from vintage, gaining depth, savory nuances and tertiary notes of truffle, dried roses and leather.

Production
Parussi is located in Castiglione Falletto, a commune known for its mix of power and finesse in Barolo, with Massolino’s parcel rooted in sandy, calcareous soils that emphasize aromatic lift and precision. Grapes are traditionally hand‑harvested, allowing careful selection of perfectly ripe Nebbiolo clusters in the vineyard. In the cellar, Massolino follows a classic, time‑honored Barolo vinification: extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aromatic complexity, followed by fermentation in temperature‑controlled tanks. The wine is then aged in large, neutral oak casks (traditionally Slavonian botti), which respect the purity of fruit and terroir while allowing slow, graceful development before bottling and further bottle aging.

Food & Serving
This finely structured Barolo is a superb match for classic Piedmontese dishes and refined, savory cuisine: think tajarin pasta with white truffle, braised veal shank, roasted lamb, game birds, mushroom risotto or aged cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to showcase its aromatics and structure. Given the youth and intensity of the 2020 vintage—especially in this 3L format—decanting is highly recommended: 2–3 hours for current drinking, and at least 1 hour even after some bottle age, to allow the wine’s floral and mineral complexity to fully unfold.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of Barolo’s benchmark, historically important estates, renowned for its unwavering dedication to traditional winemaking and to expressing the nuances of top crus. The family has long been associated with some of Serralunga’s greatest vineyards, such as Vigna Rionda, and has played a key role in elevating the global reputation of this corner of Piedmont. Parussi represents a significant extension of their vision into Castiglione Falletto, highlighting a contrasting yet complementary terroir to their Serralunga holdings. Today, Massolino is widely respected for producing age‑worthy, terroir‑driven Barolo that earns consistent critical acclaim while remaining deeply rooted in regional heritage and classic style.
