Description

Massolino Barolo Parussi 2020 is a striking single-vineyard Barolo that showcases a very different facet of this historic producer, known primarily for its wines from Serralunga d’Alba. Sourced from the Parussi cru in Castiglione Falletto, this wine is all about precision, lift, and clarity, with a brightness that makes it especially captivating. Produced in a limited quantity of just 8,300 bottles, it offers a rare and highly focused expression of Nebbiolo from sandy limestone soils with a long life ahead of it.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Parussi is luminous and vibrant, with a bright garnet core and delicate brick-tinged edges that hint at Nebbiolo’s classic transparency. The nose is finely etched and very pure, offering aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, blood orange zest, and pomegranate, layered with hints of dried herbs, anise, white pepper, and delicate notes of crushed limestone. On the palate, the wine is direct and laser-focused, with that “knife-edge” precision that defines the best Barolo from cooler, sandier sites. The tannins are firm yet ultra-fine, giving a sense of tension and structure without heaviness, while the acidity is bright and energising, carrying flavours of red berries, sour cherry, cranberry, and floral spice through to a long, tightly coiled finish. Mineral notes of chalk and stone add to the impression of clarity and definition. This is a Barolo built for the long haul: while already compelling in its youthful brightness, it will gain complexity, silkier texture, and savoury depth over 10–20+ years in the cellar.

Production
Parussi is a prized cru in the commune of Castiglione Falletto, with predominantly sandy limestone soils that tend to give highly aromatic, refined, and more aerial expressions of Nebbiolo compared to the denser, more muscular wines of Serralunga. Massolino harvests the Nebbiolo grapes by hand, with careful selection of bunches in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only the best fruit goes into this single-vineyard bottling. Traditional Barolo vinification is followed: extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins and complex aromatics, followed by aging in large oak casks that respect the purity of the fruit and the terroir. The emphasis throughout is on balance, transparency, and preserving the natural precision and tension that Parussi’s sandy limestone soils impart.

Food & Serving
This Barolo’s elegance and finely structured tannins make it a superb partner for refined, savoury dishes. Think classic Piemontese pairings such as tajarin with white truffle, brasato al Barolo (wine-braised beef), veal shank, or roast game birds, as well as mushroom risotto, porcini-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Castelmagno. Serve at 16–18°C; for optimal enjoyment in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to let the aromatics unfurl and the tannins soften slightly. As it matures in bottle, a shorter decant (30–45 minutes) will generally be sufficient to bring out its full complexity.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the benchmark traditional producers of Barolo and a key name in the history of the appellation. The estate is renowned for its deep roots in Serralunga, where it crafts some of the region’s most distinctive crus, yet Parussi stands out as its sole Barolo sourced outside the commune, offering a compelling contrast in style. Over generations, the Massolino family has become synonymous with classic, terroir-driven Barolo that marries structure, longevity, and elegance. Their wines are regularly praised by international critics and collectors alike, solidifying Massolino’s status as a leading voice in Piedmont and a reference point for those seeking authentic, ageworthy Barolo.
