Description
Massolino Barolo Parafada 2020 in the rare 3L double magnum format is a powerful yet finely sculpted expression of Serralunga d’Alba. Drawn from the tiny, 1.2-hectare Parafada cru, this Barolo marries intensity and elegance in a way that has made Massolino a benchmark name for the village. Expect a wine that captures the iron-rich soul of Serralunga, framed by a polished, almost glossy texture and impressive depth.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Parafada shows a deep, vibrant garnet core with brick-tinged edges hinting at the classic Nebbiolo profile, even in youth. The nose is immediately expressive and distinctive, with lifted notes of blood orange, lavender, and dried rose petals layered over more ferrous tones of iron, rusted metal, and a subtle earthy minerality. Hints of wild cherry, spice, and a touch of licorice add further complexity as it opens.
On the palate, this Barolo is firm and structured yet surprisingly sleek, with tightly woven tannins that feel refined and smoothed, giving the wine that “shiny” texture noted by critics. Flavors mirror the nose: tart red cherry and orange zest alongside savory mineral notes and a faint herbal lift. The 15% alcohol is present but well supported by acidity and structure, contributing to the wine’s sense of warmth and power rather than dominance. This is a wine built for the long haul; while it can be approached with extended aeration, its optimal drinking window will likely stretch from the late 2020s into the 2030s and beyond, gaining tertiary complexity of leather, truffle, and dried flowers with time.
Production
Parafada is a steep, south- to southwest-facing cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its calcareous clay and limestone-rich soils that yield Nebbiolo of notable structure and minerality. These conditions, combined with the warm 2020 vintage, help explain the wine’s ripe power and iron-like character. The Massolino family farms their parcels with a strong respect for the land, favoring meticulous canopy management and careful yield control to ensure optimal ripeness and concentration. Grapes are harvested by hand at peak maturity and sorted rigorously before fermentation. In classic Barolo fashion, the Nebbiolo undergoes a traditional vinification with extended maceration on the skins to extract tannin, color, and aromatic complexity, followed by aging in large Slavonian oak casks. This gentle, time-honored approach allows the vineyard character of Parafada to shine through rather than being masked by new oak influence.
Food & Serving
This is a structured, gastronomic Barolo that comes into its own at the table. Pair it with richly flavored dishes such as braised beef or veal (ossobuco, brasato al Barolo), slow-cooked lamb shanks, game birds, or porcini mushroom risotto. It also works beautifully with Piedmontese classics like tajarin pasta with truffle or aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano and mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to maintain freshness while allowing the aromatics to sing. In this 3L double magnum format, decant generously—at least 2–3 hours before serving in its youth—to help the tannins relax and to allow the more subtle floral and mineral nuances to fully emerge.
