Description
Massolino Barolo Margheria 2020 is a finely etched, single-vineyard Barolo from the powerful hillside village of Serralunga d’Alba. Crafted in tiny quantities (around 7,400 bottles), it captures the classic depth and structure this cru is known for, while still showcasing the elegance of the 2020 vintage. This is a wine that combines traditional Barolo character with a refined, modern precision that will reward both patience and curiosity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Margheria shows a luminous yet deep garnet hue, typical of top Nebbiolo from Serralunga. The nose is intricate and inviting, with layers of dark cherry and blackcurrant intertwined with iron-rich mineral notes, blood orange zest, violet and blue flowers, and a subtle hint of dried herbs and spice. There is a lovely tension between fruit purity and the more savory, earthy nuances.
On the palate, the wine is taut, focused, and classically structured. Ripe yet precise dark fruit is framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and vibrant acidity, giving a long and linear profile that promises excellent development in the cellar. Flavors of sweet cherry, plum skin, orange peel, and rose petal mingle with hints of tobacco, licorice, and crushed stone. The finish is long and persistent, with a delicate sweetness of red fruit reappearing at the end. While already showing notable finesse, this Barolo clearly has more to reveal with time and will gain complexity and texture over the next 10–20 years.
Production
Margheria is one of Serralunga d’Alba’s most admired crus, known for its limestone- and iron-rich marl soils and sun-catching exposures that give Barolo of depth, tension, and mineral drive. Massolino farms these vineyards traditionally, with careful, largely manual work in the rows to respect the delicate balance of the site and ensure optimal ripeness at harvest. Grapes are handpicked and rigorously sorted before undergoing a classic vinification: extended maceration on the skins to extract aromatics and structure, followed by aging in large, neutral oak casks to preserve Nebbiolo’s purity and terroir expression. The result is a wine that speaks clearly of Serralunga’s power and the finesse of the 2020 vintage.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef or veal, osso buco, slow-roasted lamb, truffle risotto, or game birds with mushroom-based sauces. It also shines alongside aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C; if enjoyed in its youth, decant for 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the aromas to unfold. For bottles with a few years of age, a gentle 45–60 minute decant is enough to reveal the wine’s full complexity.
Producer
Founded in 1896, Massolino is one of Barolo’s historic benchmarks, deeply rooted in the village of Serralunga d’Alba. Over generations, the family has built a reputation for crafting classic, terroir-driven Nebbiolo that faithfully reflects the character of their prized crus, including Margheria, Parafada, and Vigna Rionda. Their commitment to traditional methods—large cask aging, careful vineyard stewardship, and low-intervention winemaking—has made Massolino a reference point in Piedmont and a consistent favorite among critics and collectors seeking authentic, age-worthy Barolo.
