Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2019 Margheria shows a luminous garnet core with brick-tinged edges, a hallmark of Nebbiolo even in its youth. The nose opens with lifted aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry and blood orange, layered with notes of rose petal, violet, crushed stone, and a hint of anise and white pepper. Subtle tones of tobacco leaf, leather and dried herbs emerge with air, revealing its depth and complexity. On the palate, this is poised and focused, with a vibrant line of acidity driving pure red-toned fruit across a firm, finely etched tannin frame. Flavors of sour cherry, pomegranate, orange zest and red currant are interwoven with savory notes of tea leaf, licorice and flinty minerality. The structure is decidedly Barolo—taut and ageworthy—yet there is an appealing juiciness and clarity to the fruit that keeps the wine lively. While already compelling after a generous decant, the 2019 has the concentration and backbone to evolve gracefully for 12–20 years, gaining further aromatic complexity and silkier tannins over time.

Production
Margheria is a historic cru in Serralunga d’Alba, known for its calcareous clay and marl soils that impart both power and a pronounced mineral edge to Nebbiolo. The vineyard’s south and southwest exposures maximise sun while the elevation helps preserve freshness and aromatic lift. Massolino farms these parcels with meticulous attention, carrying out selective, largely manual harvests to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches reach the cellar. After careful sorting, the grapes undergo a traditional fermentation in stainless steel with extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins, color and aromatics. The wine is then aged in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks, allowing the cru’s character and Nebbiolo’s delicate aromatics to take center stage rather than being masked by new wood.

Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for richly flavored, savory dishes: think braised beef or veal shank (osso buco), slow-cooked lamb, game birds, or earthy mushroom and truffle-based dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Pecorino, and with traditional Piedmontese fare like tajarin with ragù or brasato al Barolo. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo stems to allow full aromatic expression. For current drinking, decant 1.5–3 hours ahead to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; older bottles will need gentler handling and a shorter decant, mainly to separate from sediment.
