Description
Massolino Barolo 2017 is a classic, traditionally styled Barolo that captures the elegance of Serralunga d'Alba with a touch of lift from Castiglione Falletto. Coming from a warm, dry vintage, it stands out for its poise and almost delicate structure rather than sheer power. This is a textbook expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barolo’s benchmark, family-run estates, offering both immediate charm and serious aging potential.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Massolino Barolo shows a luminous garnet core with brick-orange hues at the rim, already hinting at Nebbiolo’s ethereal character. The nose is refined and layered: sun‑kissed blackcurrant, wild strawberries and red cherries mingle with exotic plum notes. As it opens, you’ll find spice box, dried rose petals, a touch of tobacco, warm red earth and a subtle, iron-tinged, almost rusty minerality that is very typical of Serralunga.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet vibrant, with fine, powdery tannins and lively acidity that carry the fruit in a long, tapered finish. Flavors echo the nose: red berries, blood orange, sour cherry and dark plum are wrapped in nuances of licorice, clove, leather and a faint savory note. Compared to many 2017s, this Barolo feels more delicate and nuanced than monumental, with excellent balance and an inviting, drinkable profile even now. It will continue to evolve gracefully for 8–15 years from vintage, gaining further complexity in the tertiary spectrum of truffle, dried flowers and undergrowth.
Production
Massolino’s Barolo 2017 is primarily sourced from estate vineyards around Serralunga d’Alba, with a small proportion from neighboring Castiglione Falletto—two of Barolo’s most prized communes for structure and perfume. The vineyards sit on classic limestone and clay marl with significant mineral content, contributing both power and finesse to Nebbiolo. Grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness, with strict selection in the vineyard and at the winery to handle the warm 2017 conditions. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled tanks with traditional, relatively long maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aroma in a measured way. The wine is then aged in large, neutral Slavonian oak casks (botti), allowing slow, gentle maturation without overwhelming the varietal character, before being bottled and further rested prior to release.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is superb at the table with classic Piedmontese dishes such as tajarin with ragù, brasato al Barolo, vitello tonnato, or agnolotti del plin. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, roasted lamb, mushroom risotto, truffle dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C; if the wine is too warm, you’ll lose some of its precision and lift. Decanting for about 1–2 hours is recommended for bottles opened in the next few years to allow the aromatics to fully unfurl and the tannins to soften on the palate.
Producer
The Massolino family has been rooted in Serralunga d’Alba since 1896, and today the estate is regarded as one of the reference points for traditional Barolo. Working with prime vineyards in Serralunga and select plots in neighboring communes, Massolino has built a reputation for authenticity, consistency and terroir-driven wines that age beautifully. Their commitment to meticulous vineyard work, hand-harvesting and classic large-cask aging has helped define the archetypal style of Barolo from this part of the Langhe. Over the years, Massolino has earned critical acclaim for both their village Barolo and their single-vineyard crus, cementing their status as one of Piedmont’s most respected and sought-after producers.
