Description

Massolino Barbera d'Alba 2023 is a vibrant, silken red from one of Piedmont’s most respected family estates. Crafted in the hills around Serralunga d’Alba, this Barbera captures everything people love about the grape: generous fruit, refreshing acidity and sheer drinkability. It’s an unpretentious yet impeccably made expression that delivers serious quality and excellent value in the glass.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Barbera d’Alba shows a deep purple-ruby hue with youthful violet reflections. The nose is immediately inviting, with aromas of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries and raspberries, layered with hints of violets, subtle spice and a touch of licorice. On the palate, this Barbera is silk-smooth and medium-bodied, with juicy red berry and cherry fruit at its core. Lively, well-integrated acidity gives it lift and freshness, while fine, gentle tannins make it exceptionally approachable even in its youth. The finish is clean and persistent, leaving a mouthwatering trail of red fruit and a faint mineral edge. Best enjoyed over the next 3–5 years while its vivid, aromatic character is at its peak.

Production
Massolino sources its Barbera d’Alba from estate vineyards rooted in the limestone- and clay-rich soils of the Langhe hills, where cool nights and warm days help preserve acidity and build aromatic intensity. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard. After gentle crushing, the wine is traditionally vinified in stainless steel at controlled temperatures to emphasize purity of fruit and aromatic clarity. It typically sees a short period of maturation, often in tank or large, neutral oak, to soften the texture while keeping the wine’s energy and freshness front and center.

Food & Serving
This Barbera d’Alba is a natural partner for classic Italian fare: think tomato-based pastas, pizza, roast chicken, grilled sausages, charcuterie, and hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano. Its bright acidity also makes it a great match for richer dishes like lasagna, mushroom risotto or slow-cooked ragù. Serve at 16–18°C; a brief 20–30 minutes in the fridge before opening works well if the room is warm. Decanting is optional but a short splash in a carafe can help the aromatics open up, especially in its first couple of years.

Producer
Founded in 1896 in Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the historic names of the Barolo area and a benchmark estate for traditional, terroir-driven wines. Still family-owned and operated, the winery has played an important role in shaping the reputation of Serralunga as a source of powerful yet elegant Nebbiolo and expressive local varieties like Barbera and Dolcetto. With a deep commitment to careful vineyard work and classic winemaking, Massolino produces a range of highly regarded bottlings, regularly praised by international critics and enthusiasts for their authenticity, consistency and sense of place.
