Description
Massolino Barbaresco 2020 is a poised, classically styled Barbaresco from one of Piedmont’s most respected traditional producers. Still a touch reserved in its youth, it already hints at the elegance and aromatic complexity that Nebbiolo from this terroir is famed for. With 20,000 bottles produced, it offers a rare combination of authenticity, craftsmanship and accessibility from a benchmark estate.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Barbaresco shows a luminous garnet hue with brick-tinged edges, typical of young Nebbiolo. The nose opens slowly but beautifully, revealing soft red cherry, wild blackcurrant and crushed stone, intertwined with violet, blue flower and a delicate hint of rose petal. With air, subtle notes of spice and dried herbs begin to emerge, suggesting the wine’s latent complexity.
On the palate, this is finely structured and precise rather than showy, with a firm but polished tannic backbone wrapped around a core of red berries, tart cherry and dark forest fruits. Mineral notes and a cool, stony edge lend tension, while fresh acidity carries the flavors through a long, elegant finish. Still slightly closed, it clearly benefits from a bit more bottle age or extended aeration. Enjoyable now with proper preparation, it has very good aging potential—expect it to evolve gracefully over 8–15 years, gaining depth, truffle nuances and more tertiary complexity over time.
Production
Sourced from Massolino’s holdings in the Barbaresco area of Piedmont, this wine reflects the region’s classic mix of calcareous marl, clay and limestone-rich soils that give Nebbiolo its hallmark perfume and structure. The grapes are hand-harvested to ensure optimal selection in the vineyard, then brought to the cellar for gentle crushing and fermentation. Vinification follows a traditional approach, with a controlled, relatively long maceration to extract fine tannins and aromatic complexity, followed by aging in large wooden casks to preserve the purity of fruit and terroir expression while allowing the wine to slowly harmonize before bottling.
Food & Serving
This Barbaresco is a superb partner to refined, savory dishes such as risotto with porcini mushrooms, truffle pasta, braised veal or beef, roast lamb, and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or mature Pecorino. For the best expression, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given its youthful, slightly closed character in this phase, decant for 1–2 hours before serving to allow the aromas and texture to unfurl, especially if enjoyed in the next few years.
Producer
Founded in 1896 in the heart of Serralunga d’Alba, Massolino is one of the historic names of Piedmont, renowned for its classically styled Nebbiolo and unwavering commitment to traditional winemaking. Best known for their Barolo, the estate has extended its expertise to Barbaresco, bringing the same meticulous vineyard work and restrained cellar techniques that highlight the purity of grape and place. Massolino’s wines are highly regarded by critics and collectors alike, and the estate is widely considered a reference point for those seeking authentic, ageworthy expressions of Nebbiolo from one of Italy’s most prestigious regions.
