Masseto 2021 is a landmark vintage for one of Italy’s most iconic wines, returning to a pure Merlot expression from the famous blue clay slopes of Masseto Hill in Bolgheri, Tuscany. Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a deep, vivid ruby color with impressive density. The bouquet is layered and seductive, opening with dark cherry, ripe plum, blackberry, and floral notes of violet and lavender, followed by nuances of dark chocolate, warm spice, graphite, cedar, and a faint hint of blood orange. On the palate, the wine is rich and concentrated yet remarkably refined, with a linear, energetic feel that keeps everything beautifully focused. The tannins are ultra-fine and tightly woven, supporting layers of dark fruit, cocoa, sweet tobacco, herbs, and a mineral core that drives the wine to a long, precise finish. While already impressive with decanting, 2021 has outstanding aging potential and should evolve gracefully for decades.

Production
Masseto 2021 comes from the celebrated blue-clay hillside of Masseto Hill in Bolgheri, where the combination of clay and limestone soils helps retain water and support balanced ripening even in warm, dry summers. The vintage was parcel-managed carefully, with each small section of the vineyard harvested separately to preserve the finest nuances of terroir. After gentle sorting, the grapes were fermented in concrete tanks with spontaneous fermentation and slow, controlled extraction. The wine was then aged for 24 months in new French barriques, followed by a year of bottle aging to bring all the elements into complete harmony.

Masseto 2021 pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as grilled ribeye, lamb rack, venison, braised beef, truffle pasta, or slow-cooked mushrooms. Serve at 16–18°C and consider decanting for 2–3 hours if drinking young, to allow the wine’s aromatic complexity and silky structure to fully open.
