Masseto 2011

Masseto 2011 is a benchmark single-vineyard Merlot from Bolgheri, crafted from one of Tuscany’s most celebrated sites and produced in an exceptionally warm, early-ripening year. It combines remarkable concentration with Masseto’s signature elegance, showing how the estate’s blue clay soils can deliver depth, perfume, and power in equal measure.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Masseto 2011 is deeply coloured, almost opaque, and immediately impressive for its intensity. The nose is layered and seductive, with ripe wild red berries, dark chocolate, toasted spice, and a subtle Mediterranean herbal lift that adds freshness and complexity. On the palate, the wine is rich and expansive yet beautifully composed, with a core of dark fruit wrapped in polished, silky tannins. A vibrant line of acidity keeps the wine balanced and precise, while the finish is long, spicy, and persistent. It has excellent ageing potential and should continue to develop nuance and complexity for many years.

Production
Masseto 2011 comes from the famous blue clay terroir of the Masseto vineyard in Bolgheri, where the soils and coastal Tuscan climate contribute to its distinctive character. The Merlot grapes were hand-harvested from five parcels between 25 August and 1 September, then vinified separately to preserve the nuances of each site. After fermentation, the wine matured for 24 months in 100% new French barriques, followed by an additional 12 months of bottle ageing before release.

Food & Serving
This is a wine that deserves equally refined food pairings, such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, game birds, truffle risotto, or slow-braised dishes with rich sauces. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and structure to open fully.
