Description
Masi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Mazzano 2016 is a benchmark Amarone from one of Valpolicella’s most historic vineyards. It combines power, precision, and the unmistakable richness of Masi’s traditional appassimento style, with a pedigree that reaches back to a vineyard celebrated for its quality since the 12th century.
Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-garnet in the glass, it opens with layered aromas of dried cherry, blackberry compote, plum, cocoa, tobacco, and warm spice, lifted by hints of balsamic herbs and subtle minerality. On the palate it is full-bodied and beautifully structured, with concentrated dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a long, savory finish that balances depth with freshness.
This is a majestic Amarone with excellent aging potential. In a good cellar, it will continue to evolve gracefully for many years, gaining more complexity in the form of leather, dried fruit, earth, and spice.
Production
The Mazzano vineyard sits in the Classico heartland of Valpolicella, where the soils and hillside exposure help produce grapes of remarkable concentration and character. After harvest, the Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes are naturally dried in traditional fruttai during the cold winter months, concentrating flavor, sugar, and structure before fermentation begins. This classic appassimento approach is central to the wine’s powerful yet refined style.
Food & Serving
Best enjoyed with rich dishes such as braised beef, game, roast lamb, and aged hard cheeses, or with slow-cooked dishes featuring mushrooms and herbs. Serve at 16-18°C and consider decanting for at least one to two hours to allow the wine to fully open and reveal its depth.
