Description

Masi Costasera Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2021 is a powerful, richly layered red from the historic Valpolicella Classica zone, presented in a magnum format that is well suited to sharing and extended cellaring. Made from Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara using the region’s traditional appassimento method, it reflects a style that helped make Amarone one of Veneto’s most celebrated wines. Its name, Costasera, refers to vineyards facing the sunset beside Lake Garda.

Tasting Notes
Deep and concentrated in appearance, the wine opens with aromas of stewed fruit, plum and cherry, followed by hints of coffee and cocoa. The palate is structured and complex, with polished tannins and a long, balanced finish that brings together ripe fruit and savoury notes. Its concentration, structure and time in oak suggest good potential for further ageing in a suitable cellar, though it can also be enjoyed now after allowing it time to breathe.

Production
The grapes come from the Valpolicella Classica hills, where sunset-facing slopes benefit from strong sun exposure and the moderating influence of Lake Garda. The soils are described as alpine in origin, with Eocene limestone and red earth over basalt. After careful hand selection, whole bunches are dried on bamboo racks for around 120 days, concentrating their sugars and aromas. Fermentation takes place over an extended period during the cool winter, followed by malolactic fermentation and around two years of maturation in Slavonian and Allier oak barrels, then a further resting period to bring the wine into harmony.

Food & Serving
Serve at around 16–18°C, giving the wine time to open in the glass; decant for about an hour before serving, especially if enjoying it young. Its generous structure pairs well with red meat, game and mature cheeses. The magnum format makes it a natural choice for a celebratory meal or a shared bottle to linger over after dinner.

Producer
Masi Agricola has been active since 1772 and is closely associated with the wines and traditions of Valpolicella. The producer’s history is linked to the development of Amarone: according to the story behind the style, a forgotten cask of Recioto fermented until it became dry, inspiring a new kind of deeply flavoured red wine. Masi’s Costasera is a signature expression of the region and its appassimento tradition.
