Masciarelli Marina Cvetić Chardonnay 2024 is a rich, polished white wine from Abruzzo’s Colline Teatine, pairing Chardonnay’s breadth with a distinctive saline finish. Made with extended ageing in new French oak, it reflects the estate’s modern approach to the region, where Masciarelli has helped bring Abruzzo’s wines to wider attention since its founding in 1981.
Tasting Notes
Brilliant golden in colour, the wine opens with aromas of medlar, broom blossom, ginger and brioche. The palate is velvety and full-bodied, with toasted hazelnut notes and a persistent, savoury saline finish.
Its concentration and time on the lees give it the structure to develop in bottle; the producer’s description presents it as well suited to ageing, though a specific drinking window is not provided.
Production
The Chardonnay comes from south-east-facing vineyards between San Martino sulla Marrucina and Bucchianico, at elevations of 250–400 metres. Clay, limestone and sandy soils, alongside nearby woodland and natural springs, contribute to a varied vineyard environment. Harvest takes place in the first half of September. After 12 hours of cryomaceration in the press, fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels, where the wine matures for around a year on its lees with frequent bâtonnage, followed by further bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Its richness and savoury finish make it a good match for roast poultry, grilled or baked fish, creamy dishes and seafood with a little richness. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, to let the oak and aromatic detail show; a short spell in a decanter can help open the wine, though it is not essential.
Producer
Founded in Abruzzo in 1981, Masciarelli is an established producer whose wines express the character of the region’s vineyards. The Marina Cvetić range takes its name from Marina Cvetić, who has played a prominent role in the winery’s development. This Chardonnay comes from the Colline Teatine area and reflects the estate’s focus on combining regional identity with a refined, contemporary style.
