Mas d'en Gil, Coma Calcari Priorat Blanc, 2021

Mas d’en Gil’s Coma Calcari Priorat Blanc is a rare white from Priorat, made entirely from Grenache Blanc and shaped by one of the region’s coolest vineyard sites. Grown in the Coma valley at 300 meters above sea level and cooled by the Garbinada sea breeze, it offers a level of freshness and finesse that is uncommon in this part of Spain.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright, clean profile with a refined, pale appearance that hints at its freshness. The nose is vivid and layered, with saline sea spray, citrus, almond, white flowers, stone fruit, apple, and a subtle green, forest-floor character. The palate is crisp, elegant, and energetic, with a precise mineral core and a beautifully balanced texture. Despite its Spanish origin, the wine has a Chablis-like coolness and tension, making it especially appealing for those who enjoy whites with both structure and lift. It should drink beautifully now and can continue to gain nuance over the next few years.

Production
The vineyards are located in the Coma valley in Priorat, where the altitude and Garbinada winds create a notably cooler microclimate. The vines, planted in 2000, grow in Llicorella soils, the region’s characteristic slate-based terroir, which contributes minerality and focus. In the cellar, one-third of the wine is aged for six months in 500-liter oak barrels, followed by 12 months of bottle aging to bring extra harmony and depth.

Food & Serving
This wine is a natural match for goat’s cheese or sheep’s cheese, as recommended by the producer, and also works well with grilled fish, shellfish, roast chicken, or vegetable dishes with herbs and citrus. Serve it at around 12°C in large Burgundy glasses to let the aromas open fully. Decanting is generally not necessary, but a short aeration can help if served young.
