Description
Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge is one of Languedoc’s most admired reds, known for combining regional character with impressive finesse and depth. In magnum, the 2023 vintage offers extra cellaring potential and a more graceful evolution over time, making it especially appealing for collectors and generous table service alike.
Tasting Notes
Expect a deep ruby-red color with a lively, youthful sheen. The nose typically opens with blackcurrant, ripe cherry, wild herbs, cedar, and subtle spice, with Petit Verdot lending extra lift and structure. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with fresh acidity, refined tannins, and layers of dark berries, plum, graphite, and savory Mediterranean notes.
The finish is long and precise, with enough concentration to suggest excellent aging potential. While already approachable in youth thanks to the magnum format, this is a wine that should gain complexity over the next 8–15 years, developing more earthy, truffley, and tobacco-like nuances with time.
Production
Sourced from the limestone-rich, well-drained terroirs around Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert in the Languedoc, the wine benefits from a climate that gives ripeness while preserving freshness. The grapes are typically harvested carefully by hand to protect fruit quality, then vinified with a focus on gentle extraction and balance. Blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot allows the estate to build structure, aromatic complexity, and ageworthiness.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, grilled beef, duck breast, game dishes, and slow-cooked Mediterranean cuisine such as herb-crusted lamb or ratatouille with roasted vegetables. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Mas de Daumas Gassac is a landmark estate in the Languedoc and is widely credited with helping redefine the reputation of the region for fine wine. Founded in the 1970s, it built its reputation on an uncompromising approach to quality and an unusually Bordeaux-like blend in southern France. Today it remains one of the most respected names in French wine, celebrated for elegance, longevity, and consistency.
