Description
Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2023 is one of the most distinctive red wines from Languedoc, blending classic Bordeaux varieties with the estate’s unmistakable Mediterranean character. Known for its balance, elegance, and age-worthy structure, it has long been regarded as a benchmark wine from the region and a reference point for ambitious southern French red blends.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby color with impressive concentration. The nose is refined and layered, offering dark berries, cassis, black cherry, and plum, alongside notes of herbs, spice, graphite, and a subtle earthy complexity.
On the palate, it is usually full-bodied yet fresh, with finely woven tannins and a long, persistent finish. The blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot gives both power and finesse, making it a wine that can be enjoyed young for its energy but will also reward several years of cellaring.
Production
Produced in the Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert area of Languedoc, the wine comes from the exceptional terroir of Mas de Daumas Gassac, where a mix of limestone, gravel, and well-drained soils helps preserve freshness and aromatic precision. The grapes are typically harvested by hand to ensure quality selection, and vinification is carried out with a focus on respecting the character of each variety and the expression of the vintage.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, duck, beef fillet, game, and dishes with herbs or mushroom-based sauces. It is best served at around 16–18°C, and decanting for about 1 hour is recommended, especially if opening it young, to allow the aromatics and structure to fully open.
Producer
Mas de Daumas Gassac is one of Languedoc’s most celebrated estates, founded in the 1970s and quickly recognized for its pioneering approach and exceptional terroir. Often described as a “First Growth of the Languedoc,” the estate has played a major role in elevating the reputation of southern French wine and remains highly respected for its consistency, quality, and aging potential.
