Mas de Daumas Gassac Rouge 2022 is one of Languedoc’s most celebrated fine wines, produced by the pioneering Guibert family at their estate in Aniane. Often described as a “Grand Cru of the Midi” despite its Vin de Pays de l’Hérault classification, it is distinguished by its complex blend of traditional and international grape varieties, refined structure and remarkable ageing potential.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 vintage is expected to show a deep ruby colour with youthful purple highlights. Its aromatic profile combines ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and plum with Mediterranean herbs, subtle spice, graphite and earthy nuances. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet elegant, with concentrated dark fruit, fine-grained tannins and a fresh, mineral backbone. A long, layered finish hints at the complexity that develops with bottle age.
This is a wine with considerable cellaring potential. It can be enjoyed now with decanting, although additional bottle development over the next 10–20 years should bring greater savoury depth, truffle-like complexity and integration.
Production
The estate’s vineyards lie near Aniane in the Languedoc, where limestone-rich soils, varied elevations and a Mediterranean climate create distinctive growing conditions. Mas de Daumas Gassac is known for harvesting by hand and for making the wine from a carefully selected field blend rather than relying on a single variety. The grapes are vinified with a traditional, quality-focused approach and the wine is matured before release to allow its fruit, tannins and aromatic complexity to come together.
Food & Serving
Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to settle. Decant for approximately one to two hours when drinking the wine young, particularly alongside rich dishes such as roast lamb, beef, venison or duck. It also pairs beautifully with slow-cooked stews, game birds, earthy mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
Producer
Mas de Daumas Gassac was founded in the 1970s by Aimé and Véronique Guibert, who transformed a historic property in the Gassac valley into one of the Languedoc’s most respected estates. The domaine helped redefine the region’s fine-wine potential by combining its exceptional terroir with a broad selection of grape varieties and meticulous winemaking. Today, the estate remains an influential benchmark for ambitious, age-worthy wines from southern France.
