Description

Marguet Coteaux Champenois Blanc Ambonnay 2022 is a rare still white from one of Champagne’s most revered Grand Cru villages, crafted by the acclaimed grower-producer Benoît Marguet. Made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grown on biodynamically farmed vineyards in Ambonnay, it offers a pure, terroir-driven expression of Champagne without the bubbles. This limited cuvée showcases the finesse and energy that have made Marguet a reference point for serious wine lovers seeking authenticity and precision.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Ambonnay Blanc shows a pale straw to light gold color, with a luminous clarity that hints at its tension and freshness. The nose is detailed and expressive, offering notes of citrus zest, green apple, white flowers, and chalky minerality, layered with subtle hints of almond, fresh bread dough, and a gentle touch of stone fruit from the ripe 2022 vintage. On the palate, this is taut, vibrant, and finely textured. The Chardonnay brings lift and precision, with bright acidity and lemony drive, while the Pinot Noir adds mid-palate weight, a faint creaminess, and a whisper of red-fruited depth beneath the surface. Expect a long, saline finish marked by crushed stones, citrus peel, and a delicate, almost savory, herbal nuance. While immediately pleasurable in its youth for its energy and clarity, it should develop additional complexity over the next 5–7 years, gaining more nuttiness and honeyed tones with careful cellaring.

Production
Sourced from biodynamically farmed parcels in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay, this wine reflects the chalk-rich soils and cool, north-eastern climate that define top Champagne terroirs. Yields are kept low to concentrate flavor, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure pristine fruit selection at the press. The still base wine is gently pressed, then fermented with native yeasts in small oak barrels and/or neutral vessels, allowing the character of the grapes and terroir to shine without heavy oak influence. Minimal intervention in the cellar, limited sulfur, and careful élevage preserve tension, purity, and a crystalline expression of Ambonnay as a still white wine.

Food & Serving
This Coteaux Champenois Blanc is an excellent partner for refined, texture-driven dishes: think tartare of scallop, oysters and other briny shellfish, sashimi, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, or poached lobster with a light citrus butter. It also works beautifully with goat cheese, young Comté, or subtly truffled dishes where the wine’s minerality can cut through richness. Serve well-chilled but not icy, ideally around 10–12°C (50–54°F), to allow its aromatics to unfold. Decanting for 20–30 minutes is optional but can help open the wine’s nose and soften its youthful tension.

Producer
Champagne Marguet, based in Ambonnay, is led by Benoît Marguet, a passionate advocate for biodynamic farming and terroir transparency. Over the past two decades, he has transformed the domaine into one of Champagne’s most respected grower estates, working primarily with Grand Cru sites in Ambonnay and Bouzy. Horses are used for ploughing, chemical inputs are avoided, and the focus is firmly on soil health and vine balance. Marguet’s Champagnes and still wines are prized for their purity, precision, and energy, and the domaine has become a benchmark in the region for thoughtful, low-intervention craftsmanship and expressive, vineyard-driven wines.
