Marchesi di Gresy’s Barbaresco Gaiun Martinenga 2018 is a refined single-parcel expression of Nebbiolo from one of Barbaresco’s most admired sites. From the west-facing Gaiun parcel within the historic Martinenga estate, it combines elegance, precision and depth in a style that reflects both the terroir and the careful hand of winemaker Matteo Sasso.

Tasting Notes
The 2018 vintage shows a brilliant garnet-red color with an attractive orange rim, signaling both youth and classic Barbaresco character. On the nose, it opens with layered aromas of plums, cherries, sweet tobacco, licorice, black pepper, chocolate and balsamic notes. The palate is wonderfully harmonious, with pure fruit, impressive balance and silky tannins that give the wine a polished, graceful feel. While already highly enjoyable, this is a Barbaresco that can reward cellaring for several years, gaining more complexity and nuance with time.

Production
The Gaiun parcel lies on the western side of the Martinenga vineyards in Piemonte, where Nebbiolo benefits from the estate’s prized conditions and blue marl soils. Grapes are harvested by hand, then the wine undergoes fermentation before maturing for 28 months in small French oak barrels, followed by additional bottle aging before release.

Food & Serving
This Barbaresco pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, risotto, roasted game, braised beef, mushroom pasta and aged cheeses. Serve at around 16-18°C, and decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended, especially if opened young, to let the aromatics and structure fully unfold.

Marchesi di Gresy has been in the hands of the di Grésy family since 1797 and is one of the standout names in Piemonte. The family began bottling its own wines in the early 1970s under Alberto di Grésy, with a clear focus on expressing estate-grown fruit and terroir through traditional craftsmanship and modern precision. Today, the family farms 111 hectares across Martinenga, Monte Aribaldo, La Serra and Monte Colombo, and Martinenga itself is regarded as one of Barbaresco’s finest single-estate crus.
