Description
Solaia 2019 in magnum format is one of the great modern expressions of Tuscan wine, crafted by the legendary Marchesi Antinori estate. This iconic cuvée, from a single southwest-facing vineyard within the Tignanello estate, showcases a Cabernet Sauvignon–led blend shaped by meticulous vineyard work and precision winemaking. The 2019 vintage is celebrated for its balance, intensity, and clarity of terroir, affirming Solaia’s status as one of Italy’s most sought-after collectible reds.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 2019 shows a deep, concentrated ruby-purple hue with vibrant, youthful reflections—particularly striking in magnum, where evolution will be slower and more graceful. The nose is intense and layered: ripe blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry are framed by notes of violet, graphite, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and dark chocolate, with hints of exotic spice and a subtle balsamic lift.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably poised, with a core of dark fruit wrapped in ultra-fine, velvety tannins. Flavors of cassis, plum and blackberry meld with espresso, cocoa nibs, pencil shavings and a touch of savory herbs, reflecting the increased presence of Cabernet Franc in the blend. The structure is powerful but refined, supported by fresh, vibrant acidity that keeps the wine precise and long. The finish is persistent and elegant, echoing dark fruit, spice and tobacco. In magnum, the aging potential is outstanding; properly cellared, this 2019 Solaia should evolve beautifully for 20–30+ years, gaining further complexity and tertiary nuances over time.
Production
Solaia comes from a high-altitude vineyard (approximately 350–400 meters above sea level) on the sun-bathed slopes of the Chianti Classico region in Tuscany, within the famed Tignanello estate. The soils are rich in Galestro, a crumbly, rocky marl that provides excellent drainage and is particularly well-suited to Cabernet varieties, especially Cabernet Franc, which has played an increasingly important role in recent vintages as the climate has warmed. Grapes—75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Franc in 2019—are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, ensuring only perfectly ripe clusters are selected. After careful sorting, fermentation and maceration take place in temperature-controlled tanks to preserve aromatics and fine-tune tannin extraction. The wine is then matured in small French oak barriques (mostly new) for an extended period, with each variety and parcel aged separately before blending, followed by further time in bottle—magnums especially—before release to ensure harmony and integration.
Food & Serving
Solaia 2019 MG is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes. Think dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, slow-braised beef short ribs, venison with juniper and wild herbs, or roasted lamb with rosemary and garlic. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, mushroom ragù, and aged hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or mature pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both structure and aromatics. Given its youth and density, decanting is highly recommended: 2–3 hours in a broad-based decanter will help the wine open up, especially from magnum, revealing its full complexity and silken texture.
Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with roots in Tuscan viticulture dating back to 1385. Today, under the leadership of the Antinori family’s latest generations, the estate is recognized as a driving force behind the renaissance of Italian fine wine and the creation of the so-called Super Tuscans. Solaia, first produced in 1978, quickly became one of the flagship wines not only of Antinori but of all Tuscany, showcasing how international varieties and Sangiovese can express an unmistakably Tuscan identity when matched with the right terroir. Consistently acclaimed by international critics and collectors, Solaia has cemented Antinori’s status as a benchmark producer, shaping global perceptions of what Italian red wine can achieve at the highest level.
