Description
Solaia 2019 from Marchesi Antinori, here in an impressive 3L double magnum (DBMG), is one of Tuscany’s most coveted “Super Tuscan” wines and a modern icon of Italian fine wine. This vintage showcases a slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Franc and a touch less Sangiovese, resulting in a wine of remarkable precision, depth and aromatic complexity. Sourced from the famed Solaia vineyard within the Antinori family’s Tenuta Tignanello estate, it is a compelling expression of terroir-driven luxury, built for collectors and long-term cellaring.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 2019 presents a dark, saturated ruby core with a youthful, almost inky hue at the center, fading to a refined, purple-tinged rim. The nose is intense and layered, unfolding with blackcurrant, ripe blackberry and black cherry, followed by notes of graphite, cedar, sweet tobacco and dark cocoa. Hints of violet, dried herbs, exotic spice and a subtle, savory earthiness emerge with air, giving a sense of both power and sophistication.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and generously textured, with a beautiful interplay of richness and freshness. Ripe dark fruits—cassis, plum and black cherry—are wrapped in velvety, finely polished tannins. Subtle notes of espresso, licorice, baking spice and a touch of sweet pipe tobacco linger on a long, persistent finish. The elevated Cabernet Franc component adds lift, aromatic complexity and a cool, peppery edge that keeps the wine vibrant. While already remarkably harmonious young, this 2019 Solaia has significant aging potential; in 3L format, it can comfortably evolve and improve over 20–30 years, gaining further nuance, tertiary notes and silkier texture.
Production
Sourced from the Solaia vineyard within the renowned Tenuta Tignanello estate in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico zone, this wine reflects a terroir of high-altitude hillsides with well-drained soils rich in Galestro, a friable schistous marl that is particularly well-suited to Cabernet varieties—especially Cabernet Franc. The 2019 blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Franc, with the latter’s share having increased in recent years in response to climate shifts, further enhancing aromatic detail and freshness. Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimum ripeness, then vinified separately to preserve the identity of each component. Fermentation and maceration are carefully managed to extract fine tannins and pure fruit, followed by aging in French oak barriques (mostly new) to add structure, spice and textural refinement before final blending and extended bottle aging.
Food & Serving
Solaia 2019 is a natural partner for refined, richly flavored dishes such as dry-aged bistecca alla fiorentina, braised short ribs, slow-roasted lamb, truffle-infused risottos and aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano. Its structure and depth also complement game birds, wagyu beef and dishes with porcini mushrooms or black truffle. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to allow the aromatics to fully express themselves. For this young vintage and large-format bottle, decanting is strongly recommended—plan on 2–3 hours in a broad decanter to soften the tannins and allow the layers of fruit, spice and tobacco to unfold.
Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s oldest and most influential wine families, with a history that dates back to 1385 when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine Vintners’ Guild. Over more than six centuries, the Antinori family has played a pivotal role in elevating the global reputation of Tuscan wine, particularly through pioneering “Super Tuscan” wines that challenged traditional rules and redefined quality. Solaia, first produced in the late 1970s, quickly became one of Italy’s most sought-after collectibles, often earning top scores from international critics and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s great Cabernet-based wines. Today, under the guidance of the Antinori family and CEO Renzo Cotarella, Solaia remains a benchmark for terroir-driven, modern Tuscan elegance and a flagship of the region’s winemaking prowess.
