Description
Solaia 2017 in magnum format showcases Marchesi Antinori’s flagship Tuscan red in a particularly perfumed, lifted expression. This vintage stands out for its unexpectedly floral personality—wild rose, lilac and dried flowers—rather than the dense, brooding dark fruit often associated with the year. Bottled in 1.5L, it offers both immediate appeal and superior aging potential, making it a collector’s centerpiece and a striking showpiece at the table.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Solaia 2017 shows a deep, vibrant ruby-red core with garnet reflections at the rim, signaling both concentration and evolving complexity. The nose is strikingly aromatic and bouquet-driven: wild rose, violet and lilac are joined by dried and pressed flowers, followed by red cherry and blueberry, subtle cured meat, sweet spices and a refined touch of cinnamon and cedar.
On the palate, the wine is surprisingly graceful for its power, with a medium to full body that feels lifted rather than heavy. The red and blue fruit core—cherries, berries and a hint of cassis—is framed by polished, fine-grained tannins and well-integrated French oak. Notes of tobacco, graphite and a delicate ‘white earth’ dustiness, a hallmark of Solaia, emerge with air. The finish is long yet refined, with a slightly more linear, taut profile than some richer vintages. In magnum, this 2017 has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully from now with decanting, but is likely to evolve and gain further nuance over 12–20+ years.
Production
Solaia is produced from a single, southwest-facing vineyard on the Tignanello estate in the hills of Chianti Classico, in the heart of Tuscany. The stony, well-drained marl and limestone soils, combined with excellent exposure and significant diurnal temperature shifts, give the wine its intensity, aromatic lift and structural finesse. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with a significant proportion of Sangiovese and a smaller share of Cabernet Franc, all harvested by hand with rigorous selection in both vineyard and cellar. After gentle crushing and temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, macerations are carefully managed to extract fine tannins and aromatic purity rather than heaviness. The wine is then aged for about 18 months in small French oak barriques, a high proportion of them new, with separate lots matured by variety and parcel before blending and further refinement in bottle—extended in the case of magnums before release.
Food & Serving
Solaia 2017 is an ideal partner for refined, richly flavored dishes: bistecca alla fiorentina, roasted or grilled lamb, dry-aged ribeye, venison, or braised beef cheeks all flatter its structure and depth. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, porcini risotto, aged Tuscan pecorino and other mature hard cheeses. Serve at 17–18°C (about 63–64°F) and allow ample time for the wine to open; for a magnum, decanting 2–3 hours before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to fully reveal its floral complexity, layered fruit and savory nuances.
Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with roots dating back to 1385 and a pivotal role in the renaissance of fine Tuscan wine. From their estates in Chianti Classico, notably Tignanello, Antinori helped define the Super Tuscan movement, challenging traditional rules and elevating Italy’s global reputation for premium wines. Solaia, first produced in 1978 from the best Cabernet parcels on the Tignanello estate, quickly became one of Italy’s most sought-after and highly rated wines, frequently earning top scores and international acclaim. Today, it stands as a benchmark for modern Tuscan excellence, combining international varieties with unmistakable regional character and meticulous craftsmanship.
