Description

Marchesi Antinori’s Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso 2022 in magnum format (1.5 L) is a polished expression of the Tuscan coast, blending international varieties with unmistakable Italian finesse. Crafted from 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot, it showcases both power and precision, wrapped in a luxurious, velvety texture. This flagship Bolgheri red has become a benchmark for the region, reflecting Antinori’s long history of innovation and its leading role in shaping the modern Super Tuscan style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Guado al Tasso presents a deep, vibrant ruby hue with youthful purple highlights, hinting at its concentration and energy. The nose is unexpectedly refined and mineral-driven, with a striking graphite or pencil-lead note that frames aromas of ripe blackcurrant, black cherry and plum. Layers of sweet spice, vanilla from the new oak, cocoa, tobacco leaf and a touch of dried herbs and cedar gradually unfold as the wine breathes. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, yet remarkably seamless. The core is plush and velvety, offering dense dark fruit, cassis and blackberry alongside hints of mocha, licorice and sweet baking spices. That lifted, stony minerality keeps everything in balance, cutting through the richness and giving the wine definition and length. Fine, polished tannins and well-judged acidity support a long, caressing finish with a gentle sweetness of fruit rather than residual sugar. In magnum, this 2022 has excellent aging potential: it will drink beautifully from release, but should evolve gracefully for 12–18 years, gaining complexity and tertiary notes of leather, cigar box and truffle over time.

Production
Guado al Tasso is sourced from estate vineyards in the Bolgheri DOC, on the Tuscan coast, where maritime breezes, abundant sunshine and well-drained, mixed soils of sand, clay and gravel create ideal conditions for Bordeaux varieties. The proximity to the sea moderates temperatures, preserving acidity and aromatic freshness even in warm vintages. Grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure optimal ripeness and careful selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Vinification typically involves separate fermentation of each variety in stainless steel or temperature-controlled tanks, allowing precise extraction of color, tannins and aroma. After blending—where the increased share of Cabernet Franc in recent years has been key to enhancing balance and aromatic lift—the wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels, which contribute notes of vanilla, spice and toast while integrating with the fruit and structure before bottling in magnum.

Food & Serving
This Bolgheri Superiore is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled ribeye, slow-braised short ribs, venison, or lamb with rosemary and garlic. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Toscano, and with truffle-infused dishes or mushroom ragù over fresh pasta. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and silky texture. In magnum, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to open up the nose and soften the structure; as it ages, a shorter decant, primarily to separate any sediment, will be sufficient.
