Description

Marchesi Antinori Solaia 2021 in magnum (1.5 L) is a commanding yet beautifully polished expression of contemporary Tuscan greatness. In this vintage, Solaia leans into finesse over sheer power, revealing depth and nuance rather than excess. Dark plum, mocha, licorice, chocolate, spice, lavender and menthol unfold gradually in the glass, capturing the elegance and precision that define Antinori’s modern style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Solaia shows a deep, opaque ruby hue with violet reflections, signaling both youth and concentration. The nose is complex and seductive, offering layers of ripe dark plum and blackcurrant wrapped in notes of mocha, licorice, dark chocolate, sweet baking spices, lavender and a refreshing touch of menthol. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably refined, with impeccably integrated oak and finely woven tannins that frame the fruit rather than dominate it. Flavors of black cherry, plum and cassis mingle with espresso, cocoa, anise and subtle tobacco, supported by vibrant acidity that keeps everything lifted and precise. The finish is long, persistent and poised, hinting at graphite and herbs as it lingers. In magnum, the 2021 Solaia has excellent aging potential; it will benefit from cellaring and should continue to gain complexity over the next 15–25 years and beyond.

Production
Solaia is sourced from Antinori’s famed hillside vineyard in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico area, a site prized for its limestone-rich soils, excellent drainage and sunny exposition that delivers both ripeness and structural backbone. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with a proportion of Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity. Vinification is carried out with great precision to preserve aromatics and texture: after fermentation, the 2021 vintage spent a total of 18 months in oak, beginning with three months in once-used barrels during malolactic fermentation, followed by 15 months in 100% new French oak. This meticulous élevage ensures the oak is seamlessly integrated, adding complexity and structure without overshadowing the character of the fruit or the terroir.

Food & Serving
This is a quintessential wine for refined, richly flavored dishes: think bistecca alla fiorentina, dry-aged ribeye, braised lamb shank, venison, or slow-cooked short ribs. It also shines alongside truffle risotto, porcini mushroom dishes, aged Pecorino Toscano and hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. Given its youth and structure, decanting for 2–3 hours is recommended, especially in the near term, to allow the tannins to soften and the layered bouquet to fully emerge.

Producer
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most historic and influential wine families, with roots in winemaking dating back to 1385. As pioneers of the so-called “Super Tuscan” movement, the Antinori family helped redefine Tuscan wine by embracing international varieties and modern techniques while remaining deeply connected to their regional heritage. Solaia, first produced in the late 1970s from a particularly well-exposed parcel within the Tignanello estate, has since become one of Tuscany’s most iconic and collectible wines, regularly earning top scores from international critics. Today, Antinori stands as a benchmark producer in Tuscany and beyond, known for its unwavering commitment to quality, innovation and the faithful expression of terroir.
