Description
Marc Kreydenweiss Pinot Gris Moenchberg Grand Cru Bio 2018 is a deeply expressive, biodynamic white from one of Alsace’s most storied vineyards. This is Pinot Gris at its most serious: rich, structured and intensely mineral, yet refined and endlessly complex in the glass. The Moenchberg site has been cultivated since at least 1097 by Benedictine monks, and its marl and sandstone soils remain a benchmark for world‑class Grauburgunder/Pinot Gris.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Moenchberg Grand Cru shows a luminous, deep straw to light golden colour that hints at both ripeness and concentration. The nose is immediately seductive and elegant: generous layers of ripe yellow stone fruit (apricot, mirabelle plum, yellow peach) are interwoven with subtle earthy nuances. With air, the wine unfolds a remarkable umami complexity, with notes reminiscent of soy, miso and delicate Japanese dashi, alongside hints of toasted nuts, gentle spice and wet stone.
On the palate, this Pinot Gris combines power and finesse in equal measure. It is full‑bodied and mouth‑filling, yet finely balanced by a firm backbone of acidity and pronounced minerality. Ripe fruit and savoury, almost broth‑like depth play off each other, giving great tension between richness and precision. The texture is silky, with impressive structure and a long, lightly salty, mineral finish that lingers and evolves. Highly complex and still youthful, it has excellent aging potential over the next 8–12 years, gaining even more nuance and tertiary character with time. This is a wine to follow slowly over several hours, as each sip reveals new layers and facets.
Production
Moenchberg Grand Cru, in the heart of Alsace, is a historic hillside vineyard characterised by marl and sandstone soils that provide superb drainage and deep rooting, yielding concentrated yet finely etched Pinot Gris. Farmed organically and biodynamically by Famille Kreydenweiss, the vines are tended with great care, and harvesting is done by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes reach the cellar. The fruit is typically pressed gently and fermented with indigenous yeasts, allowing the terroir to speak without heavy intervention. Maturation in large old foudres and extended time on the fine lees add texture, complexity and a subtle, integrated richness, while preserving freshness and the distinctive, saline minerality of Moenchberg.
Food & Serving
This Grand Cru Pinot Gris is a natural partner for rich, flavourful cuisine that can match its depth and umami character. Think roasted poultry or veal in cream sauces, dishes with wild mushrooms, truffled risotto, or delicately spiced Asian cuisine featuring miso, soy or dashi (such as miso‑glazed cod or umami‑rich broths). It also pairs beautifully with foie gras, mature soft cheeses and refined vegetarian dishes based on root vegetables or squash. Serve cool but not too cold, ideally around 10–12°C, to allow the aromatics to unfurl. Decanting for 1–2 hours is strongly recommended, and enjoying the bottle slowly over an evening will reward you with an evolving tapestry of aromas and flavours.
