Description
Château Malartic-Lagravière Rouge 2020 is a polished Graves red from one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates, offering the classic depth and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with added spice and finesse from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. As a Grand Cru Classé, it reflects both pedigree and precision, combining the smoky-mineral character for which Graves is known with the elegance and aging potential collectors look for.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a deep ruby-garnet colour with bright youthful intensity. The nose is layered and refined, with blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry leading the way, followed by cedar, tobacco, graphite, violet, and a subtle smoky-earthy note that speaks to the Graves terroir.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, structured, and balanced, with ripe dark fruit, well-integrated oak, fine tannins, and a long, savoury finish. The 2020 vintage should have excellent cellaring potential, developing more complexity, truffle, leather, and dried herb nuances over the next decade and beyond.
Production
Malartic-Lagravière is located in the Graves appellation, where gravelly soils lend the wines their signature freshness, minerality, and Cabernet-driven structure. The estate’s vineyards benefit from a well-drained terroir and a favorable Atlantic-influenced climate, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly while preserving acidity and aromatic detail. The wine is typically produced through careful parcel selection, hand harvesting, and traditional vinification with temperature control to preserve fruit purity, followed by maturation in oak barrels to build texture and complexity.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled ribeye, roast lamb, duck breast, venison, or rich mushroom dishes. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses and dishes featuring truffle or herb-forward sauces. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the bouquet and structure to खुल fully.
Producer
Château Malartic-Lagravière is a historic Graves estate with roots dating back to the 18th century, named after the Count of Malartic-Lagravière. Today it is regarded as one of the leading properties in Pessac-Léognan and one of the few estates classified as Grand Cru Classé de Graves. Its reputation rests on consistency, refinement, and a strong ability to produce wines of both immediate appeal and impressive longevity.
