Description
Malartic Lagravière Blanc 2021 is a refined white Bordeaux that captures the freshness and tension of its vintage with remarkable precision. From the gravelly soils of Pessac-Léognan, this dry white blends vibrant citrus and herbal notes with a subtle creaminess, offering both immediate pleasure and serious structure. As one of the few classified growths in Bordeaux equally renowned for its white wines, Malartic Lagravière Blanc stands out as a benchmark for elegant, ageworthy Bordeaux blanc.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Malartic Lagravière Blanc shows a bright, pale straw color with green reflections, signaling its youth and vibrancy. The nose is lifted and pure, brimming with aromas of lime zest, grapefruit and fresh mint, intertwined with notes of pastry cream, white flowers and a touch of wet stone. There’s a sense of tension and precision on the bouquet that feels both invigorating and refined.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied yet beautifully chiselled, with a focused, linear profile. Zesty citrus and cool herbal tones are layered over a core of ripe stone fruit and subtle creaminess from its élevage, creating an intense, aromatically driven white that never feels heavy. The acidity is lively and mouthwatering, carrying flavors into a long, saline, almost seaside-like finish that leaves a clean, mineral impression. While delicious in its youth, this vintage has the structure and concentration to evolve gracefully for 8–12 years, gaining complexity and additional texture with time in bottle.
Production
Malartic Lagravière Blanc comes from the estate’s prime white-wine parcels in Pessac-Léognan, where deep gravel soils mixed with limestone and clay provide excellent drainage and a cool, mineral backbone to the wines. The vineyard, predominantly planted to Sauvignon Blanc with a significant portion of Sémillon, is carefully managed with an emphasis on balance, canopy health and optimal ripeness of the grapes. Harvesting is done in small, selective picks, parcel by parcel, to capture each plot at perfect maturity. In the cellar, the must is gently pressed and fermented at controlled temperatures, typically in a high proportion of French oak barrels (a portion new) to build texture and aromatic complexity without overwhelming the wine’s natural tension. Lees stirring (bâtonnage) and careful élevage help weave together the bright citrus, herbal and creamy notes, resulting in a wine that is both precise and layered.
Food & Serving
This 2021 Malartic Lagravière Blanc is a superb partner for refined seafood and elegant, subtly sauced dishes. Think oysters, scallop carpaccio, grilled langoustines, lemon-and-herb roasted sea bass, or lobster with a light citrus butter. It also shines alongside sushi and sashimi, goat’s cheese, or poultry in a creamy tarragon sauce, where its saline, citrus-driven profile cuts through richness. Serve well-chilled but not ice-cold, ideally around 9–11°C (48–52°F), to allow its aromatics to open. A brief 20–30 minutes in a decanter can help the young wine unwind and reveal more of its mint, grapefruit and creamy nuances.
Producer
Château Malartic Lagravière is a prestigious Grand Cru Classé de Graves, located in the heart of Pessac-Léognan just south of Bordeaux. With origins tracing back to the 18th century, the estate gained prominence under the Lagravière name for its exceptional gravel soils—considered among the finest in the region. Today, under dedicated, quality-focused ownership, Malartic Lagravière is one of the rare Bordeaux properties equally celebrated for both its red and white wines. Its blancs, in particular, have become reference points for modern white Bordeaux: intensely aromatic, mineral-driven and capable of long, graceful aging. Consistent critical acclaim and a rigorous vineyard and cellar philosophy have cemented Malartic Lagravière’s reputation as one of Pessac-Léognan’s most reliable and exciting producers.
