Tasting Notes
In the glass, Mad Dog Warwick 2022 shows a pale lemon hue with green reflections, hinting at both youth and vibrancy. The nose is wonderfully aromatic and expressive: ripe citrus (lemon zest, lime) and yellow stone fruits are layered with nuances of white peach, juicy nectarine, and a delicate floral lift. Wood aging brings a gentle touch of baking spice and vanilla pod, while a fine smoky, slightly reductive note adds intrigue and complexity. On the palate, this Riesling is mouthwatering and energetic, driven by vivid acidity that gives structure and length. The fruit is concentrated yet precise, with citrus, mirabelle plum, and yellow apple wrapped around a core of mineral tension. The fruit for Mad Dog Warwick 2022 comes from steep, terraced vineyards in the Mosel, where old Riesling vines dig deep into the slate soils that have defined the region for generations. This classic Mosel terroir, with its poor, stony ground and excellent drainage, concentrates flavor while the river’s moderating influence and the slopes’ sun exposure help grapes ripen slowly and evenly. Harvesting is carried out by hand on the steep inclines, allowing precise selection of perfectly ripe, healthy bunches. In the cellar, Madame Flöck favors a careful, minimalist approach: gentle pressing, cool fermentation to preserve aromatic purity, and élevage with a portion of the wine raised in wood. The judicious use of oak adds subtle spice and structure without dominating the Riesling’s vibrant fruit and mineral character, while a lightly reductive style preserves freshness and that signature smoky edge.
