Lungarotti Torre di Giano Vigna Il Pino 2022 is a still white wine from Torgiano in Umbria, blending Grechetto, Trebbiano and Vermentino into a poised balance of freshness, texture and mineral character. A pioneering Italian white when it first embraced oak ageing in the 1970s, it reflects Giorgio Lungarotti’s long-standing commitment to the region and takes its name from a historic pine tree that once stood beside the vineyard.
Tasting Notes
The nose brings together yellow peach and citrus with delicate hints of oak. On the palate, lively citrus acidity frames flavours of white fruit, followed by a long, savoury finish with mineral and gently herbal notes. The wine is bottle-aged for one to two years to help preserve its aromatic clarity; its potential for further cellaring is not specified.
Production
The grapes come from the west-facing Vigna Il Pino hillside vineyard, around 230 metres above sea level. Deep clay soils over a notably calcareous subsoil contribute to the wine’s structure and mineral character. Grechetto, Trebbiano and Vermentino are harvested between August and September and gently pressed. Some free-run juice undergoes cryomaceration, then ferments and matures on fine lees in oak barrels, while the remainder is vinified in stainless steel. The components are blended in spring before the wine receives one to two years of bottle ageing.
Food & Serving
Its citrus freshness and savoury finish make it a natural match for grilled fish, shellfish, roast poultry and dishes featuring herbs or fresh cheeses. Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, to bring out its fruit and mineral detail. Decanting is not generally necessary; opening the bottle shortly before serving should be sufficient.
Producer
Lungarotti is an established Umbrian producer whose work is closely associated with Torgiano and with Giorgio Lungarotti’s vision for the region. Torre di Giano Vigna Il Pino reflects that legacy: the winery describes it as one of the first Italian white wines to be aged in wood in the 1970s. Its name honours the centuries-old pine that marked the vineyard until 2020, while the label pays tribute to Perugia’s historic Fontana Maggiore. The supplied description also cites a score of 93/100.
