Description

Lungarotti San Giorgio 2018 is a refined Umbrian red that marries the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the elegance and lift of Sangiovese. Crafted by one of Italy’s benchmark family estates, it’s a polished, age-worthy wine that captures the character of central Italy in a modern, yet deeply rooted, style. Named in honor of founder Giorgio Lungarotti, San Giorgio stands as a tribute to the pioneering spirit that first put Umbria on the fine wine map.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, San Giorgio 2018 shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with garnet highlights beginning to appear at the rim. The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum, intertwined with notes of dried herbs, cedar, tobacco leaf, and a touch of sweet spice and graphite from careful oak aging. On the palate, this is a structured yet supple red, with Cabernet’s firm tannins and dark fruit beautifully tempered by Sangiovese’s red-fruited brightness and natural acidity. Flavors of black cherry, cassis, and wild berries unfold alongside hints of licorice, cocoa, and savory spice, leading to a long, harmonious finish with a subtly mineral edge. The 2018 vintage is already showing well, but the concentration and balance suggest very good aging potential over the next 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and softness with time in the bottle.

Production
San Giorgio is sourced from Lungarotti’s estate vineyards in Umbria, around Torgiano, where the rolling hills and clay-limestone soils provide excellent conditions for both Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. The region’s continental climate, with warm days and cooler nights, allows for slow, even ripening, preserving freshness and aromatic intensity. Grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal maturity, allowing for careful selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. After gentle crushing and fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins, the wine is matured in oak—often a mix of barriques and larger barrels—to integrate structure and add complexity, before further refinement in bottle prior to release.

Food & Serving
Lungarotti San Giorgio 2018 is a versatile food wine that shines alongside rich, savory dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted red meats, lamb with rosemary, braised beef, game birds, and hearty pasta dishes such as ragù alla bolognese or pappardelle with wild boar. Mature hard cheeses and aged pecorino are also excellent companions. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and balance. Decanting for 45–60 minutes before serving is recommended, especially in its youth, to allow the tannins to soften and the wine’s layered bouquet to fully emerge.

Producer
Lungarotti is one of Italy’s leading family-owned wineries and the estate that first brought Umbria to international attention in the 1960s. Founded by the visionary Giorgio Lungarotti, the winery gained renown with Rubesco and its Riserva, regularly celebrated among Italy’s finest wines and consistently highly rated in guides such as Gambero Rosso. Today, Giorgio’s daughters, Chiara and Teresa, carry the legacy forward, overseeing not only the vineyards and cellars, but also the estate’s acclaimed wine and olive oil museums and its five-star hospitality in Torgiano. Lungarotti is a regional benchmark for quality and sustainability, covering a large share of its energy needs by reusing plant material from production—with the ambitious goal of fully self-sufficient, sustainable energy use in the near future.
