Description

Louis Roederer’s Coteaux Champenois ‘Hommage à Camille’ Rouge 2020 is a rare, still red wine from the heart of Champagne—a region better known for its sparkling icons. Crafted almost entirely from Pinot Noir, it showcases a different, more intimate side of Roederer’s famed terroirs. This cuvée pays tribute to Camille Olry-Roederer, the visionary woman who guided the house through the mid-20th century and helped shape its modern identity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, ‘Hommage à Camille’ Rouge 2020 shows a luminous, translucent ruby hue with garnet reflections at the rim, echoing fine Burgundy in its delicacy and clarity. The nose is refined and quietly complex, revealing wild strawberry, ripe raspberry, and red cherry layered with rose petals, violet, and a subtle hint of blood orange. With air, deeper nuances emerge: fine spice, a touch of underbrush, and a whisper of graphite and cocoa. On the palate, the wine is precise and elegant, with a silken texture and a cool, chalk-driven core. Juicy red berries and stone fruits mingle with notes of cranberry, pomegranate, and delicate savory tones—dried herbs, black tea, and a light smokiness from carefully judged oak. The tannins are ultra-fine and powdery, giving structure without heaviness, while the lively acidity—typical of Champagne’s cool climate and chalk soils—keeps everything fresh and long on the finish. Enjoyable now with decanting, this 2020 has the balance and tension to develop further complexity over the next 8–12 years.

Production
Sourced from meticulously selected Pinot Noir parcels in the historic vineyards of Champagne, ‘Hommage à Camille’ Rouge is born from pure chalk and limestone-rich soils that lend clarity, minerality, and lift to the wine. The vines, tended with great care and often farmed organically or biodynamically within Roederer’s estate approach, are picked by hand to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy bunches are used. In the cellar, the fruit is sorted, gently destemmed, and vinified as a still red wine rather than for sparkling base—allowing longer maceration to extract delicate color, aromatics, and fine tannins. Fermentation takes place in small vats, followed by aging in carefully selected French oak barrels (a portion new, a portion used) to add subtle structure and complexity without overshadowing the purity of Pinot Noir or the signature chalky finesse of Champagne.

Food & Serving
This refined Pinot Noir is a natural match for elegant, nuanced cuisine: think roast duck with cherries, guinea fowl, veal tenderloin, or pork with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with charcuterie, fine pâtés, lighter game dishes, and aged, nutty cheeses such as Comté or Tomme. Serve slightly cool, at around 14–16°C (57–61°F), to highlight its aromatic lift and finely etched structure. A gentle decant of 30–60 minutes before serving helps the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more floral and savory layers.

Producer
Founded in 1776 in Reims, Louis Roederer is one of Champagne’s last great family-owned houses and the creator of the legendary Cristal. Over generations, Roederer has built a reputation for quality by focusing on estate-owned vineyards and an almost Burgundian sensitivity to individual parcels and terroirs. The ‘Hommage à Camille’ wines honor Camille Olry-Roederer, who led the house from the 1930s to the 1970s and was instrumental in establishing its modern prestige. Today, Louis Roederer is a benchmark not only for world-class Champagne but also for the rare and increasingly sought-after still wines of Coteaux Champenois, which showcase the region’s exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in a new light.

Really stylish Pinot Noir from Champagne; the wine is like a grand cru Burgundy and balances elegant acidity with dense, silky tannins. A wine that flies a bit under the radar since Roederer is so well known for its sparkling wines, but it is a wine they themselves hold in high regard. Named after Camille Olry-Roederer, the woman who shaped the house into the status it has today
