Description

Lopez de Heredia’s Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva is one of Rioja’s most distinctive white wines, combining old-vine depth, traditional oak ageing and a singular, ageworthy style. Made from a classic blend led by Viura with Malvasía Riojana, it captures the house’s old-world patience and precision in a wine that feels both layered and timeless.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright golden hue with an almost luminous intensity, hinting at its long élevage. The nose is remarkably complex, unfolding with toasted and smoky notes, dried herbs, pollen, mushroom, earth and tea-like nuances, along with the subtle spice that comes from extended ageing in seasoned oak. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied but feels expansive and finely textured, with sharp, vivid flavours, a lifted, almost ethereal quality and excellent persistence. It finishes long, dry and slightly saline, with chalky grip and a savory umami edge. This is a wine built for aging and should continue to evolve gracefully over many years.

Production
Viña Tondonia Blanco Reserva comes from old vines averaging 63 years of age, planted on white, stony soils in Rioja’s Tondonia vineyards. The 2014 vintage was challenging due to generous rainfall before and during harvest, making the resulting wine especially notable for its balance and concentration despite the conditions. Fermentation took place in old oak vats with native yeasts, followed by prolonged maturation for around six years, and likely longer, in well-seasoned neutral American oak barrels deep in the winery’s caves.

Food & Serving
This is a superb match for roast poultry, turbot, mushroom dishes, seafood with rich sauces, and aged Manchego or other savory hard cheeses. Serve slightly cool, around 10–12°C, to allow the aromatics and texture to show fully. Decanting is recommended, especially if opened young, to help the wine unfold and soften its more reserved nuances.

Producer
Lopez de Heredia Tondonia is one of Rioja’s most historic and revered estates, famed for its unwavering commitment to traditional winemaking. The winery has built a legendary reputation for long ageing, old vines and minimal intervention, producing wines that are widely respected for their authenticity, complexity and longevity. Viña Tondonia remains one of the house’s most iconic bottlings and a benchmark for classically made Rioja.

A distinctive white Rioja shaped by long traditional aging. Viña Tondonia Reserva Blanco 2014 reveals dried citrus, orchard fruit, nuts, and subtle oxidative complexity, balanced by freshness. Elegant, layered, and gastronomic—perfect for savory dishes or slow appreciation.

Magical wine, so unique in character that the flavor is described as "tondonian". It gets its character from an intentional oxidative winemaking process, herbal, nutty, and stony. Weight and structure to match a range of different dishes, but I gladly use it as the white alternative to red wine dishes. It does not need further aging (released when ready to drink), but can rest for a long time in the cellar if you prefer
