Description

Lis Neris Friuli Isonzo Pinot Grigio Gris 2022 shows just how serious Pinot Grigio can be when treated like a fine white Burgundy. Crafted from 100% Pinot Grigio grapes sourced from a single, carefully selected vineyard of fully mature vines, this is a textured, structured white with real depth and personality. Gentle aging in French oak adds dimension and complexity, while preserving the grape’s pure Friulian character.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Pinot Grigio Gris 2022 presents a luminous straw yellow hue with subtle golden reflections, hinting at its concentration and time in oak. The nose is layered and refined, offering ripe pear, white peach and Golden Delicious apple, alongside notes of acacia blossom, citrus peel, and a gentle toasted nuance from the 500-liter French barrels. Hints of almond, wet stone and subtle baking spice emerge with a bit of air. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied for Pinot Grigio, with a creamy yet precise texture. Juicy stone fruit and orchard fruit are framed by bright, saline acidity and a distinct mineral backbone, characteristic of Friuli Isonzo. The oak is beautifully integrated, contributing volume and a silky mouthfeel rather than overt woodiness. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of citrus zest, spice and a gentle nuttiness. Thanks to its structure and élevage on fine lees for around 10–11 months, this vintage has very good aging potential, evolving gracefully over 4–6 years from release, gaining more honeyed, nutty and tertiary complexity while retaining freshness.

Production
The grapes for Gris 2022 come from a selected vineyard in the Friuli Isonzo zone of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, an area known for its stony, well-drained alluvial soils and cooling winds from the Adriatic and the Alps. These conditions naturally limit yields and accentuate aromatic intensity and mineral tension in the wines. All vines used for this cuvée have reached full productive maturity, ensuring optimal balance between concentration and finesse. Harvest is timed to achieve ripe, expressive fruit with vibrant acidity, typically carried out by hand to allow careful selection. Fermentation begins in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks to preserve purity and aromatics, then the wine is transferred to 500-liter French oak barrels, where both fermentation completion and maturation occur. The wine rests for 10–11 months on its fine lees in the same barrels, with occasional bâtonnage as needed, building texture, aromatic breadth and complexity while respecting the intrinsic character of Pinot Grigio and the terroir.

Food & Serving
This structured, gastronomic Pinot Grigio is an ideal partner for refined seafood dishes such as seared scallops, turbot, halibut or sea bass, as well as lobster, crab or rich shellfish pastas. It also pairs beautifully with poultry in cream or butter-based sauces, veal scaloppine, risotti (especially with porcini mushrooms or seafood), and aged or semi-hard cheeses like Asiago, Comté or Grana Padano. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both freshness and texture. A brief decanting of 20–30 minutes, or simply giving the wine time to open in the glass, will help reveal its full aromatic range and oak-derived complexity.

Producer
Lis Neris is one of the benchmark producers of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, with estate vineyards centered in the Isonzo sub-region, where the Isonzo River and stony alluvial plains create an ideal environment for high-quality white wines. Founded as a family estate and steadily refined over decades, Lis Neris has become synonymous with precision, terroir-driven whites that rival the great wines of Burgundy and the Loire in terms of depth and age-worthiness. By focusing on low yields, meticulous vineyard work and thoughtful, often barrel-influenced vinification, the winery has helped elevate Friuli’s global reputation for serious, complex white wines. Their Gris bottling, in particular, is a reference point for what barrel-fermented and lees-aged Pinot Grigio can achieve in this unique corner of Italy.
