Lillian Syrah Gold Series Nr. 6, 2016 is a highly limited selection from one of California’s most admired Syrah projects, founded by Maggie Harrison. The Gold Series is reserved for the most expressive barrels, offering extra depth, texture, and aromatic intensity beyond the classic Lillian cuvée.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this is a deeply colored Syrah with an intense, polished presence. The nose opens with lavender, black pepper, dark berries, smoked meat, iron, and a subtle hint of wood smoke, showing the kind of complexity that has made Lillian such a benchmark name in California Syrah. The palate is powerful yet finely composed, with concentrated black fruit, savory spice, and a cool mineral edge lifted by fresh acidity. The tannins are substantial but silky, giving the wine impressive structure and a long, layered finish. With proper cellaring, it should continue to develop beautifully over the coming years, gaining more nuance and secondary complexity.

Production
The fruit comes from some of Santa Barbara County’s top Syrah sites, including White Hawk, Bien Nacido, and Stolpman, where cool Pacific winds, morning fog, and warm afternoons create ideal conditions for ripening while preserving freshness. The soils range from sand and limestone to rockier parcels, contributing to the wine’s mineral drive and layered character. Harvesting is done with extreme selection to ensure only the best fruit is used, and the wine is fermented naturally in small open-top vessels before aging for 24 to 36 months in French oak. It is bottled without fining or filtration to preserve purity, texture, and intensity.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled beef, lamb, game, BBQ with spice, ribs with peppery sauce, and rich mushroom or truffle dishes. It also pairs very well with aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours to let the wine fully open up.
