Description
L'IF 2019 is a refined Saint-Émilion red that captures the energy and elegance of a top Bordeaux vintage. Crafted in limited quantities, it shows remarkable purity of fruit and a beautifully perfumed character that unfolds in the glass. Often described as the finest L’IF to date, this 2019 release combines concentration with poise, making it a compelling choice for collectors and right-bank enthusiasts alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, L’IF 2019 presents a deep, vibrant ruby hue with a youthful, almost luminous edge. The nose is richly expressive and immediately inviting, brimming with aromas of sweet wild berries, ripe plums and cherries, interlaced with notes of violets, rose petals, raw cocoa and subtle warm spice.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, generous and concentrated yet never heavy. The texture is plush and enveloping, with layers of dark red fruit, a fine mineral thread and well-integrated tannins that provide structure without austerity. Lively acidity keeps everything fresh and lifted, leading into a long, perfumed finish that echoes with floral, berry and cocoa nuances. Still youthful, the 2019 has excellent aging potential; it should drink well from the mid-term but will reward 10–20 years of careful cellaring, gaining complexity and silkiness over time.
Production
L’IF is produced in Saint-Émilion on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where clay and limestone soils favor Merlot and Cabernet Franc, giving wines both power and finesse. The vineyard is typically farmed with meticulous, parcel-by-parcel attention, with hand harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve fruit purity and balance. In the cellar, the grapes are carefully sorted and vinified in small lots to express the nuances of each plot, followed by aging in French oak barrels (a portion new) to add texture, polish and aromatic complexity while maintaining the wine’s signature freshness and precision.
Food & Serving
L’IF 2019 pairs beautifully with refined, flavorful dishes such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, veal, or duck, as well as earthy preparations featuring mushrooms, truffles or lentils. It also works well alongside aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and structure. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth is recommended to allow the wine to fully open, soften the tannins and release its layered bouquet; older bottles will require a gentler, shorter decant to remove sediment and preserve delicate aromas.
Producer
L’IF is the Saint-Émilion project of Jacques Thienpont, the renowned vintner behind the legendary Pomerol estate Le Pin. Acquired and developed with the same obsessive focus on quality and terroir expression, L’IF has quickly established itself as one of the appellation’s most exciting emerging names. Working from an exceptional hillside terroir and with very low yields, the estate produces a small number of meticulously crafted bottles each year, earning critical acclaim and a growing reputation for precision, elegance and age-worthy depth in Bordeaux’s right-bank landscape.
