Description
Bottled in an impressive 3L double magnum, L’IF 2018 is a modern Saint‑Émilion that balances power, purity and finesse in equal measure. Crafted from a blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc, it showcases the elegance of limestone terroir with the generosity of a ripe Bordeaux vintage. This large‑format bottling promises not only an outstanding drinking experience today, but also exceptional longevity for collectors.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, 2018 L’IF is deep purple to almost opaque, with a vivid, inky core that hints at its concentration. The nose opens with beautifully ripe notes of baked raspberries, mulberries and black forest gâteau, layered with hints of rosehip, fragrant earth and a gentle dusting of cocoa. Subtle tones of licorice, crushed violets and warm soil add further complexity as the wine unfolds in the glass.
On the palate, this is a full‑bodied, richly textured Saint‑Émilion, packed with generous red and black fruits wrapped in velvety, fine‑grained tannins. The mid‑palate is plush and mouthcoating, yet lifted by a fresh line of acidity (pH 3.55) that keeps everything precise and vibrant. Flavors of dark chocolate, sweet baking spices and a savory licorice note linger on a long, gently spicy finish. With its structure, balance and 14.5% alcohol superbly integrated, this 2018 has excellent aging potential; in a 3L double magnum format, it should evolve gracefully over two decades or more, gaining further complexity and silkier texture with time.
Production
L’IF is rooted in the limestone and clay‑limestone slopes of Saint‑Émilion, where well‑drained soils and optimal exposure allow Merlot and Cabernet Franc to ripen fully while retaining freshness. The vineyard is tended with meticulous, low‑yield viticulture, and the grapes are harvested by hand, parcel by parcel, to ensure only perfectly ripe bunches reach the cellar. The 2018 blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc was vinified with great care to preserve purity of fruit and fine tannic structure, followed by 12–16 months of maturation in French oak barriques, approximately 50% of which were new. This careful use of oak frames the wine with subtle spice and texture without overwhelming its terroir‑driven character.
Food & Serving
2018 L’IF in double magnum is a superb centerpiece for a special meal, pairing beautifully with roasted lamb, dry‑aged ribeye, duck breast with a red wine reduction, or classic dishes like beef Wellington and braised short ribs. Its earthy, chocolaty and licorice‑tinged profile also makes it a natural match for truffle dishes, wild mushroom ragout, slow‑braised veal and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve slightly cool at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Given the youth and concentration of the 2018 vintage—especially in a 3L format—decant for at least 2–3 hours before serving to allow the aromatics and tannins to fully unfurl; even longer decanting will reward those with patience.
Producer
L’IF is a relatively young but already highly regarded estate in Saint‑Émilion, created when renowned vigneron Jacques Thienpont—best known for the legendary Pomerol estate Le Pin—acquired and revitalized a small property on the appellation’s limestone plateau in the late 2000s. Renamed L’IF (French for “yew tree”), the domaine has quickly earned a reputation for producing finely etched, terroir‑driven wines that emphasize purity, elegance and precision. With its tiny vineyard holdings, painstaking vineyard work and small‑scale, artisanal production, L’IF has become one of the most exciting names in Right Bank Bordeaux, consistently attracting critical attention and a devoted following among collectors seeking contemporary, top‑tier Saint‑Émilion.
