Description
L’IF 2018 is a poised and powerful Saint-Émilion red that captures the opulence of the great 2018 vintage in Bordeaux. Crafted from 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc, it marries ripe intensity with sculpted freshness and a velvety, modern right-bank style. With its limited production and serious aging potential, this is a bottle aimed at collectors and enthusiasts alike.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, L’IF 2018 shows a deep, opaque purple-black hue that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose opens with layered aromas of baked raspberries, mulberries and black forest gâteau, wrapped in notes of rosehip, fragrant earth and a fine, dusty minerality.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, packed with generous red and black fruits that feel both plush and precise. Velvety tannins frame flavors of dark cherry, blackberry compote, cocoa and a touch of licorice, with subtle spicy undertones lingering through the long, persistent finish. The balance between ripe fruit, fresh acidity (pH 3.55) and 14.5% alcohol suggests excellent cellaring potential; expect it to evolve beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining further complexity and polish.
Production
L’IF comes from limestone and clay-limestone soils in Saint-Émilion, a terroir renowned for giving Merlot and Cabernet Franc both depth and finesse. The grapes are typically harvested by hand in small parcels, allowing careful selection at optimum ripeness. In 2018, the blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc was vinified with meticulous attention to extraction to preserve fruit purity and fine tannin structure, then matured for 12–16 months in French oak barriques, around 50% of which were new, adding subtle notes of spice, chocolate and structure without overwhelming the vibrant fruit character.
Food & Serving
This 2018 Saint-Émilion pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, veal with truffle jus, or game birds. It also works well alongside mushroom-based dishes, lentil casseroles and aged hard cheeses like Comté or a mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal expression; decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and open up the layered aromatics. As it gains bottle age, a shorter decant of around 30–45 minutes will generally be sufficient.
Producer
L’IF is the Saint-Émilion project of Jacques Thienpont and Fiona Morrison MW, the team best known for the legendary Pomerol estate Le Pin. Situated on prime limestone terroir, the estate represents a contemporary, small-scale approach to right-bank Bordeaux, focusing on precision, low yields and meticulous vineyard work. In a relatively short time, L’IF has become one of the most talked-about emerging names in Saint-Émilion, earning critical attention for its purity of fruit, refined structure and ability to reflect its limestone origins with both elegance and power.
