Château L’IF 2017

L'IF 2017 is a refined Saint-Émilion red that showcases the poise and purity of a cooler Bordeaux vintage. Crafted from 91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it balances vibrant fruit with an elegant, almost weightless texture. This cuvée has quickly gained a reputation as one of the most exciting newer names on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, offering Grand Cru Classé quality in an understated, contemporary style.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, L'IF 2017 displays a deep garnet-purple hue, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with beautifully defined notes of crushed red cherries and black raspberries, followed by darker tones of black plum, baking spices, and dried rose petals, lifted by a subtle flicker of Sichuan pepper. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a lovely sense of precision and clarity. Silky, finely knit tannins frame a core of pure red and black fruit, while bright acidity brings energy and length. The mid-palate is fruit-driven and persistent, leading into a long, gently earthy finish with hints of spice and florals lingering on the tongue. While already accessible with some air, this vintage has the structure and balance to develop gracefully over the next 8–12 years, gaining further complexity and integration.

Production
L'IF is sourced from limestone and clay-limestone parcels on the plateau and slopes of Saint-Émilion, a terroir renowned for giving Merlot and Cabernet Franc both depth and elegance. The vineyards are tended with great care, with a focus on low yields and precise parcel selection to capture the character of each plot. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, carefully sorted, and vinified in small lots to preserve nuance. Fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, followed by maturation in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, to add polish and subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit. The result is a wine that reflects both its noble terroir and a modern, detail-driven approach to Right Bank winemaking.

Food & Serving
L'IF 2017’s refined structure and fresh profile make it a versatile partner at the table. It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, veal, or beef tenderloin, as well as game birds, duck, or truffle-infused dishes that echo its earthy undertones. It also complements mushroom risottos, lentil dishes, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or aged Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. Decant for 1–2 hours in its youth to allow the nose to unfurl and the tannins to soften, or simply open 30–45 minutes ahead if you prefer a more tightly focused expression.

L'IF is a relatively young but highly regarded estate in Saint-Émilion, owned and overseen by Jacques Thienpont, the renowned vigneron behind the cult Pomerol estate Le Pin. Since acquiring and gradually refining the property, the Thienpont family has elevated L'IF into one of the appellation’s most closely watched names, emphasizing precision viticulture and small-scale, artisanal winemaking. Despite its short history compared with some of Bordeaux’s centuries-old châteaux, L'IF has quickly gained recognition for its purity of fruit, finesse, and strong expression of Saint-Émilion’s limestone terroir, standing as a modern reference point on Bordeaux’s Right Bank.
