Tasting Notes
In the glass, Les Fiefs de Lagrange 2021 shows a deep ruby colour with purple highlights, signalling its youth and freshness. The nose is immediately expressive, with aromas of blackcurrant, Morello cherry and blackberry layered over notes of graphite, cedar, crushed violets and a hint of tobacco and baking spice from oak aging. On the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied Saint-Julien with finely grained tannins and a cool, classical Bordeaux profile. Juicy blackcurrant and black cherry fruit are wrapped in savoury tones of pencil lead, cigar box, licorice and a touch of cocoa. The 2021 vintage brings freshness and balance rather than sheer power, with a vibrant acidity that keeps the wine precise and food-friendly. The finish is long and elegant, with lingering dark fruit and subtle spice. Production
Les Fiefs de Lagrange is produced from vineyards in Saint-Julien on the Left Bank of the Gironde, where deep gravel soils over sand and clay provide superb drainage and naturally limit yields, encouraging concentration and complexity in the grapes. The estate now farms over 120 hectares of vines, predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Petit Verdot, with an average vine age of around 35 years. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimum maturity, destemmed, then pass through an optical sorting system to ensure only pristine berries go into the vats. Fermentation takes place separately for each plot in a vast array of temperature-controlled oak, concrete and stainless steel vessels of varying sizes, allowing highly precise tailoring of extraction. After blending trials, the final assemblage for Les Fiefs de Lagrange is selected below the Grand Vin, then matured in French oak (in a lower proportion of new wood than the first wine) to preserve fruit purity while adding subtle structure and complexity.

It pairs beautifully with roast lamb, entrecôte steak, confit duck, veal chops, or a simple roast chicken with herbs. It also works well with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and hard cheeses such as Comté, aged Gouda or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (about 60–64°F) for optimal expression. In its youth, decanting for 45–60 minutes will help open up the aromatics and soften the tannins; as it gains some bottle age, a brief 30-minute decant is usually sufficient to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to unfold.

Château Lagrange is a historic Saint-Julien estate that was classified as a 3ème Grand Cru Classé in the famous 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Like many Médoc châteaux, it endured periods of decline and changing ownership in the 20th century and came perilously close to fading into obscurity after the Second World War, partly due to financial strain and the sale of vineyards that later formed the basis of neighbouring estates such as Château du Glana, Château Lalande-Borie and, in part, Château Gloria. The turning point came in 1983, when Japan’s Suntory Group purchased the property and invested heavily in both vineyards and winery. The estate has since expanded its vineyard holdings from around 48 to over 120 hectares and completely modernised its cellar, installing cutting-edge optical sorting and a large battery of vats to vinify each parcel separately. Today, Château Lagrange is regarded as one of the most dynamic properties in Saint-Julien, consistently punching above its official classification.
