Description
Château Léoville Poyferré 2021 is a classic Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most admired Second Growth estates, combining pedigree, precision, and the depth that has made the property a benchmark on the Left Bank. Built on a rich Cabernet-led blend with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, it captures both the refinement of its appellation and the estate’s long-standing reputation for producing wines of elegance and power.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine typically shows a deep ruby color with purple reflections, signaling youth and concentration. The nose is expected to unfold with blackcurrant, plum, graphite, cedar, violet, and subtle spice notes, backed by the earthy, mineral-tinged character that gives Saint-Julien its signature finesse.
On the palate, Léoville Poyferré is known for a layered, polished texture, firm yet well-integrated tannins, and vibrant freshness supporting flavors of dark berries, tobacco leaf, cocoa, and toasted oak. The 2021 vintage should offer excellent balance and structure, with strong aging potential and the capacity to develop greater complexity over the next 10–20 years, or longer in a well-stored cellar.
Production
Produced in Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, the estate benefits from gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage and help the Cabernet Sauvignon ripen with precision and intensity. The blend is sourced from carefully tended vineyard parcels and harvested with close attention to maturity, then vinified to preserve freshness, purity of fruit, and the estate’s hallmark structure. Aging in French oak barrels adds depth, spice, and polish without overwhelming the wine’s elegant core.
Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, venison, or braised short ribs, as well as mushroom-based dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C for the best expression of fruit and structure, and consider decanting for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the wine to open fully.
Producer
Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the historic estates of Saint-Julien and has been classified as a Second Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Over time, it has built a strong reputation for producing luxurious, deeply colored wines that combine concentration with refinement, making it one of the standout names in the Médoc and a consistent favorite among collectors.
