Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2008 Léoville Las Cases shows a deep, garnet-ruby core with a slightly brightening rim, reflecting its gradual development while still retaining a youthful intensity. The nose is refined and layered: dark berries and blackcurrant mingle with ripe black cherry, complemented by notes of graphite and pencil shavings, cedar, tobacco leaf and finely integrated new oak. With time in the glass, more subtle savoury tones appear—hints of violets, cigar box and a touch of crushed stone. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, taut and focused rather than opulent, with vibrant, juicy acidity giving lift and tension to the dark fruit. The tannins are ripe yet firm and tightly knit, providing a powerful spine that promises a long life ahead. Flavours of cassis, blackberry and plum are layered with cedar, licorice, graphite and a whisper of spice, leading into a long, penetrating, mineral-tinged finish. Drawn from the historic walled “grand clos” of Léoville Las Cases in Saint-Julien, this wine is rooted in classic Left Bank terroir: deep gravel over sand and clay, with excellent drainage that favours Cabernet Sauvignon and contributes to the wine’s signature graphite-mineral character. The vines here are old and low-yielding, carefully tended and harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and rigorous selection of only the best bunches. In 2008, a meticulous sorting preceded a traditional Bordeaux vinification: fermentation in temperature-controlled vats, gentle extraction to preserve finesse, and a long maceration to build structure and complexity. The wine was then aged in French oak barriques—typically a high proportion new—for an extended period, allowing the tannins to refine and the oak to integrate seamlessly with the dense fruit and terroir-driven nuances.
