Description
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Saint-Julien’s most sought-after estates, known for producing profoundly structured, Cabernet Sauvignon-led wines with remarkable precision and longevity. As a 2ème Grand Cru Classé from the historic 1855 classification, the 2020 vintage combines power, elegance, and the estate’s signature cool, Left Bank restraint.
Tasting Notes
The wine typically shows a deep, almost opaque garnet color in youth, with a polished yet tightly coiled profile. On the nose, expect blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, crushed violet, and subtle tobacco, with the 2020 vintage often bringing extra freshness and definition.
The palate is layered and serious, with firm but refined tannins, concentrated dark fruit, savory mineral notes, and a long, linear finish. This is a wine built for patience rather than immediate gratification, and it should evolve beautifully over many years, gaining complexity for two decades or more in a strong cellar.
Production
Sourced from one of the most prized terroirs in Saint-Julien, with gravelly soils that favor Cabernet Sauvignon and promote excellent drainage, the estate benefits from exceptional old-vine parcels and meticulous vineyard work. Grapes are harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, then vinified with careful extraction to preserve purity, structure, and the character of each component before aging in oak barrels.
Food & Serving
Ideal with classic premium pairings such as roast lamb, beef tenderloin, venison, duck breast, or dishes with truffle and earthy mushroom sauces. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for at least 1–2 hours when young to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Léoville Las Cases is one of the most revered names in Bordeaux, with roots dating back centuries in the Médoc and a reputation for producing wines of Grand Cru quality well beyond its official classification. Often regarded as one of the Clos-like estates of the Left Bank due to its exceptional vineyard location bordering Pauillac, it is celebrated for consistency, depth, and age-worthiness, and is regularly counted among the finest wines of Saint-Julien.
