Description

Léoville Barton 2005 is a classic Saint-Julien red from one of Bordeaux’s most respected estates, classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. From the celebrated 2005 vintage, it combines the appellation’s hallmark structure and poise with remarkable depth, making it an excellent choice for collectors of traditionally styled Bordeaux.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby to garnet in colour, with developing brick-red hues at the rim. The nose is refined and complex, offering blackcurrant, blackberry and plum alongside cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf, leather and subtle earthy notes. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet controlled, with concentrated dark fruit, firm but polished tannins and refreshing acidity. A long, savoury finish reveals hints of spice, pencil lead and forest floor. This is a mature wine with considerable staying power and should continue to evolve gracefully for many years when properly stored.

Production
The Léoville Barton vineyards lie on the gravelly soils of Saint-Julien, where excellent drainage and deep layers of gravel encourage the Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend to develop both concentration and freshness. The wine is traditionally made from estate-grown grapes, with careful selection and fermentation followed by maturation in French oak. The 2005 vintage is widely regarded as one of Bordeaux’s finest, producing wines with outstanding balance, structure and ageing potential.

Food & Serving
Serve at approximately 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come gradually to cellar temperature. Decant for around one to two hours, taking care to leave any mature sediment behind. Its structure and savoury character make it a natural partner for roast beef, rack of lamb, venison, duck, ribeye steak and mature hard cheeses.

Producer
Founded by the Irish-born Barton family in the 19th century, Léoville Barton remains one of the notable estates of Saint-Julien and is still associated with the Barton family today. Unlike many classified Bordeaux properties, the estate is known for its understated château presence, while its wines have earned a strong reputation for purity, longevity and classic Left Bank character. The domaine’s consistently refined, Cabernet-driven style has made it a benchmark for traditional Saint-Julien.
