Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 1996 Léoville Barton shows a healthy, deep garnet core with just a hint of bricking at the rim, signalling maturity without fatigue. The nose unfolds gradually, revealing layered aromas of ripe blackberry, wild hedgerow fruits, blackcurrant, and red plum, supported by notes of black truffle, sandalwood, cigar box, and a touch of dried floral and gamey nuance. On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet firmly structured, with gripping, finely grained tannins that frame its classical profile. Flavours of red and black berries are interwoven with white pepper, clove, cedar, and subtle earthy undertones, giving a savoury, almost slightly animal complexity that is very true to traditional Saint-Julien. The finish is long, precise, and savoury, with a refreshing line of acidity keeping the wine lively. At this stage, it sits in a particularly “happy” drinking window and, well cellared, still has the potential for further development over the next decade.

Production
Léoville Barton is rooted in the gravelly, well-drained soils of Saint-Julien in the Médoc, a terroir famous for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of great finesse and longevity. The blend is typically dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc, all sourced from mature vines. Grapes are harvested by hand to ensure careful selection in the vineyard, then sorted before fermentation in traditional temperature-controlled vats. Vinification follows a classic Médocain approach, with extended maceration to extract structure and depth, followed by élevage in French oak barriques (a significant proportion new) to refine the tannins and build complexity without overwhelming the wine’s terroir-driven character.

Food & Serving
This 1996 Léoville Barton is ideal alongside classic French dishes such as roast lamb with rosemary, entrecôte with Béarnaise, duck breast, or beef Wellington. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or mature cheddar. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux stems to allow the aromatics to expand. A gentle decant of about one hour is recommended to awaken the wine and separate any sediment, but avoid excessively long decanting so its more delicate tertiary notes remain intact.

Château Léoville Barton traces its roots back to the early 19th century, when the Barton family, of Irish origin, established themselves among the elite properties of Saint-Julien. Classified as a Deuxième Cru (Second Growth) in the historic 1855 Classification, the estate has long been celebrated for producing some of Bordeaux’s most traditionally styled, age-worthy clarets. Unusually, Léoville Barton has no château building on the estate itself and is vinified at neighboring Langoa Barton, a reflection of the family’s understated, quality-first philosophy. Today, the Barton family’s stewardship is widely respected for its consistency, classical approach and its ability to deliver wines that rival many First Growths in character and longevity, particularly in great vintages like 1996.
