Description

La Petite Eglise 2020 is the refined, small-production sibling to Pomerol icon L’Eglise-Clinet, crafted with the same meticulous care but from dedicated, separate parcels. This is a serious, ageworthy Right Bank Bordeaux that combines purity of fruit with structure and depth, offering a more approachable expression of the estate’s signature style. With only about 4,500 bottles produced, it’s a rare and quietly coveted bottle for collectors and Bordeaux lovers alike.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 La Petite Eglise shows a deep, vibrant ruby color with youthful purple highlights, underscoring its concentration and energy. The nose opens with sweet red and black cherries, ripe berries and hints of crushed rose petals, layered over subtle notes of clay-rich earth and a touch of spice. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied, lively and tightly knit, with a core of juicy cherry and dark berry fruit framed by fine, firm tannins. There’s a sense of precision and seriousness to the structure that speaks to its pedigree, with fresh acidity keeping everything lifted and focused. The finish is long and persistent, currently marked by its youthful grip and mineral-tinged earthiness. While already showing promise, this 2020 will reward patience and should evolve beautifully over the next 10–15 years, softening in texture and gaining tertiary complexity with bottle age.

Production
La Petite Eglise comes from dedicated parcels in Pomerol, on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, where clay and gravel soils over an iron-rich subsoil give Merlot and Cabernet Franc their depth, perfume and natural richness. The fruit is harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, allowing for meticulous selection both in the vineyard and at the sorting table. In the cellar, traditional Bordeaux vinification is employed: gentle extraction in temperature-controlled vats preserves purity of fruit and fine tannin, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, often with a significant proportion of used barrels to keep the oak imprint elegant and in balance with the wine’s vibrant fruit and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This structured yet refined Pomerol is a natural partner for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal in a red wine reduction. It also works beautifully with earthy components like wild mushrooms, truffle-infused dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours in its youth will help soften the tannins and open up the bouquet; with more bottle age, a shorter, gentle decant to remove sediment will be sufficient.

Producer
L’Eglise-Clinet is one of Pomerol’s most respected and sought-after estates, long admired for producing wines of intensity, depth and remarkable longevity from some of the appellation’s finest clay and gravel terroirs. Over the years, the château has earned a reputation for meticulous vineyard work, low yields and a highly quality-driven philosophy that has elevated it into the top tier of Right Bank properties. La Petite Eglise was created to showcase specific dedicated parcels under the same exacting standards, offering a more accessible yet still profoundly serious expression of this benchmark Pomerol producer. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, the wines of L’Eglise-Clinet are considered among the most distinctive and ageworthy in Bordeaux.
